3D printers have evolved since 1986 starting with stereolithography which created layers of a polymer resin using ultraviolet lasers. Selective laser sintering in 1987 used lasers to sinter powdered materials while fused deposition modeling in 1992 extruded heated thermoplastic filament. More recent techniques include selective laser melting in 1995 which fully melts metal powders and binder jetting in 1996 that uses liquid to fuse powder particles into objects. Affordable desktop 3D printers arrived in 2004 and can now produce industrial-quality parts.
