Evolution occurs when there is genetic variation between individuals within a species, competition for limited resources, and differential survival and reproduction. For evolution to happen, both individuals and the environment must change over time, as no change would result in no evolution. The main sources of change are overproduction of offspring, genetic variation between individuals, competition within a species for scarce resources, and differences in survival and reproduction with the most fit individuals passing on their genes.
