The Everglades National Park covers 1.5 million acres in Florida and was established in 1947 to preserve the area's flora and fauna. It receives over 1,500 mm of rain annually, which it stores as groundwater, and is home to over 1,000 plant species as well as alligators, deer, panthers and many birds and snakes. However, the Everglades faces challenges including invasive plants that threaten native species and have caused sharp declines in wading bird and animal populations.
