Day 13 Kathmandu Respective City
Kathmandu to Lukla
Trust in 1964, the Lukla airstrip is a modern manmade
marvel. Landing and taking off from this 450 meter long
Your EBC adventure
starts the minute you
board your flight to Lukla. Built by
Sir Edmund Hillary’s the Himalayan
runway is enough to take your breath away each time you experience it.
Lukla in Nepali means “place of many sheep”.
Lukla to Phakding
Also seen is a little village called
Chaurikharka, situated on a
plateau, where Hillary built a
school for the local children.
The walk from Lukla
to Phakding is dotted
with majestic gorges and
quaint farms. Along the
Chheplung where the
original trail from Jiri to EBC
meets the current road.
Sagarmata National Park
Established in 1976 the Sagarmata
National Park is a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. It covers 1148 sq
metres and includes the entire
Khumbu area, in fact most of the
areas covered within it are above
10,000 feet. Many New
Zealanders, along with Hillary
helped establish park rules and
also helped in the setting up of the
park. Its rules and regulations are
now enforced by a contingent of
the Nepali Army based out of
Namche Bazaar.
Phakding to Namche Bazaar
Just as you start walking from Phakding and cross the Phakding
bridge you get a spectacular view of Thamaserku (6618m/21,721ft)
and this view follows you all the way till Kala Patthar.
Namche Bazaar gets its name from a “horse shoe”.
Namche Bazaar also affords views of Everest and
the Lhotse and Nuptse ridge.
Namche Bazaar to Tengboche
Tengboche is situated in a high
altitude meadow. The trail from
Namche to Tegboche passes through
a divine Rhododendron forest that is
a sight to see in full bloom.
The Tengboche Monastry, the
largest Gompa in the Khumbu
region, was burnt in 1989 and
rebuilt by funds collected by Hillary.
An ideal time visit the Monastery is
in Autumn during the Mani Rimdu
festival.
This white Yak belonged to
the Monastery
Tengboche to Dingboche
As you start walking from Tengboche towards Dingboche the Birch and
Rhododendron forest continues to flank your steps. After about an
hour’s walk you reach a village called Deboche (3770m/12,370ft) which
houses a Bhuddhist nunnery. Once you cross Pangboche, which houses
the oldest monastery in the Khumbu you will also leave behind the tree
line.
Dingboche has magnificent views of three of the world’s highest six
peaks – Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu.
Dingboche to Loboche
This walk goes through arid and rough terrain and yet it is one of the best walks in the entire
trek. Also on this day you get a brief glimpse of Pomuri(7138m/23,418ft).
After walking for a few hours you reach a ridge called Chupki Lhara(4840m/15,879ft).
This ridge holds a special significance in the hearts of mountaineers as it is dotted with
hundreds of memorials and prayer flags to honour those who perished on Everest.
Lobuche to Gorak Shep
This walk also continues on arid and
rough terrain, however, it is
grandiose. Mostly flat and barren
these paths are strewn with large
boulders. Your trail also crosses the
Changri glacier which originates in
Tibet and meets the Khumbu glacier
here.
Gorak Shep to EBC
Walking to EBC from Gorak Shep is
completely moraine. Though you
cannot see Everest from EBC but you
can experience and glimpse the
passion and reverence that the
mountaineers feel for this mountain,
which is nothing short of a pilgrimage
for them.
Once at the base camp you will be able
to see the Khumbu ice fall which is the
first stage or obstacle that climbers
must cross in their dream to summit
the mountain.
Gorak Shep to Kala Patthar
Kala Patthar is the famous accent where all
climbers go to keep their first date with
Everest. Though it is a tough and rigorous
climb the views and the sense of
achievement felt after climbing Kala Patthar
are beyond an expression in words.
View from Kala Patthar
