How does your media
product represent particular
social groups?
Plot
 In our opening titles we show the sequence of events
life of a young woman called Emily to turn her into a
serial killer. We see her being abandoned as a baby,
growing up, being tormented, living in an orphanage,
and finally the end result of her being transformed into
a serial killer.
 Please note that due to the lack of human characters in
our title sequence not that many social groups have
been represented.
Gender
 Gender is also represented in our
sequence as our main role is female.
This is positive because the vast
majority of leading roles in the media go
to males. Our character is victimised at
the beginning it is common for female
characters to be victimised and
portrayed as weak, this is negative.
Although our character attempts to
escape demonstrating strength in a
female which is not common and
positive. The fact that our character
ends up being a serial killer as almost
all of the serial killers represented in the
media are men. The knives and blood in
the sequence represent her killing.
Females are not usually handling
weapons in the media it is more
conventional for this to be left to males.
It is good that we broke away form that
convention, it also makes our product
unique and more interesting.
Class and status
 Our media product represents class and status to a certain
extent. Our main character comes from a disadvantaged
background, this is evident by looking at her torn and dirty
clothing. She is also very thin looking. It is arguable that this
is a negative representation of the lower class. However it is
not entirely negative either as it prompts the audience to
sympathise for her. The media often represents the lower
class as lazy, this is not the case with our title sequence.
Our character attempts to run away from the the abuse she
is facing showing strength. She has been put in a difficult
situation giving her little hope for the future. She attempts to
escape showing strength, which is positive. Although we did
not focus on social class it a prominent theme at the
beginning of the sequence.
Age
 Our character is a victim of older people thus giving
them a negative representation. However this is not
immediately visible in our title sequence because you
do not see them as we discarded “the bully
scene”. The younger character has a somewhat
positive representation as she is hard done by at the
start of the sequence. Although it overwhelmingly
negative as she becomes possessed. As these events
could not happen in real life therefore not all of the
representations give a social commentary.
