What kind of institution might
distribute your media product
           and why?
           Laura Hinds
Production Companies
• A production company is a company who
has involvement in the production, and
  distribution of a film
• These companies are often involved in
  funding
• The companies can be big hollywood
  involved institutions or small independent
  institutions
Large Institutions
• A few examples of large production and
  distribution companies are:
• Warner Brothers Pictures
• Momentum Pictures
• Walt Disney
• Universal Studios
Warner Brothers

• Own 19.7% of the US market share
• The biggest in the film industry
• Been involved in the making of Harry
  Potter, Batman and Star Wars
Momentum Pictures
• Releases around 20 major motion picture
  titles per year
• One of the leading independent motion
picture distributors in the UK and Ireland
• Been involved in the production of The
King’s Speech, P.S I Love You and The Men
  Who Stare at Goats
Walt Disney

• One of the most renowned production
  companies
• Holds 15.3% of the US market share
• Been involved in the production of Pirates
of the Caribbean, Meet the Robinson’s and
  National Treasure
Universal Studios

• Makes millions for the film industry
• Owns 12.2% of the US market share
• Been involved in the production of the
Bourne series, the American Pie series and
  Knocked Up
Small Institutions
• A few examples of small, independent film
  production and distribution companies are:
• See-Saw films
• Bedlam productions
• Fractured Films
• Working Title
See-Saw Films
• Independent film production company
  founded in 2008
• Operates out of London and Sydney
• Was involved in the production of The
  King’s Speech, it’s biggest film
• Also involved in the production of smaller
films such as Oranges and Sunshine and
  Linear
Bedlam Productions
• Based in London
• Involved in feature film and documentary
  production
• Also involved in The King’s Speech, it’s
  biggest film
• Involved in the production of smaller films
such as Zaytoun, The Lady Who Went Too
Far and documentaries such as RMS Titanic:
  Case Closed
Fractured Films

• Established in 2002 in Brighton
• Been involved with EMI, Channel 4 and the
  BBC
• Involved in the making of small films such as
Bow Street Runner, Killjoy and Money To
  Burn
Working Title
• One of the biggest independent film
companies, which is branching out to join
  with various Hollywood studios
• Based in London
• Founded in 1983
• Though it was originally much smaller and
so had a smaller budget to work with more
independent films, it has since been involved
in the production of Love Actually and Les
  Miserables
Independent film
             production
• Independent film production companies have a much smaller budget, as they
are not backed by big companies like Universal Studios etc.

• Without big funding, only small films can be made, which do not attract a
    large audience

• It is not affordable for these companies to distribute by large new media
methods, such as ITunes and on BluRay etc. as a their small budget does not
make room for this, therefore the film isn’t seen widely

• As the film does not have a big audience, not as much money is made, so the
    companies stay small budgeted
Large film production
• These companies have large budgets to
start, so can buy shares in large production
  value films
• They can put money into varying methods
  of distribution, including DVDs, BluRay,
  merchandise and even ITunes
• As the film is more widely seen because of
the value of distribution and marketing, the
film makes a large profit, and the production
  companies make a large profit
Who would distribute
     my film?
• A small, independent production company
• My films production cost is not high
• The film would not be well known or easily
seen by companies, as it is not being
created by a big director, so it would not
  create a big profit
• A small, independent production company
  would attract some attention, however.
Who would distribute
     my film?
• See-Saw films
• Though they have a small budget, and are an
  independent film company, they were
involved in The King’s Speech, and so have
more recognition than a lot of independent
  film companies
• Has been involved in the production of
similar/close genre films to my film so has
experience in this area of film
