Evaluation Question 7
1. Evaluation
Question 7:
Looking back at your preliminary
task, what do you feel you have
learnt in the progression from it to the
full product??
2. I contributed ideas for the preliminary task,
however did not do any of the drawing. By
contrast, I did the vast majority of the
storyboarding for The Ring, and so was acutely
aware of how my drawings were to represent our
protagonist in a certain way and the whole
atmosphere of the film/opening. Shots were
suggested as a team but having the responsibility
of drawing them out as the team envisioned was
difficult but rewarding and ensured that I knew well
what was happening in all three scenes. I feel I
learnt a lot storyboarding, both about how vital it is
to the production of the film but also to how it
greatly deepened my working knowledge of our
film and camera shots.
SToryboarding
3. For the preliminary task I was part of a larger group than for
the real thing. I found in the preliminary task I wasn’t
particularly involved in filming because of the numbers;
however knew I wanted to contribute a lot more for the film
opening and thought it would be easier to have one common
vision between fewer group members. I feel for The Ring I
was an active part of the filming process, especially the
bedroom scene as Pip and I did the test shoot together so
knew exactly what we wanted and needed to do for the real
thing. I feel I have developed the skills to be able to film
proficiently and confidently and also support the other
members of my group when they have an idea and want to
try it out and film alone. I also feel that my vision for the film
opening became tighter, even after the test shoot, as I knew
more about the process of filming and how different angles
and lighting affected the atmosphere and look of the shot.

4. In our preliminary task I do not feel we thought
about framing that much as were more focussed
on telling the narrative.
However for our film opening, correct and
effective framing was crucial and a major part of
the film opening. Effective framing in The Ring
was achieved by correct planning, storyboarding
and collaboration as a team to achieve one
common vision.
Framing
5. Continuity was very important
throughout the film opening in all
three scenes. The church scene
was less reliant on very accurate
continuity, however whilst filming
we did realise it was more
important than we expected.
Excellent continuity was achieved
by correct planning and assessing
the set before each shot to ensure
that no props have moved and that
the acres is in the same
position/wearing the same thing
etc.
Continuity
6. In the preliminary task we didn't consider mise-
en-scene that much, however our use of props
and costume did contribute to the idea of it
being set in a school, so mise-en-scene was
obviously still present.
Being set in the 1920’s, correct and effective
mise-en-scene was vital to our film opening.
Important pieces which contributed to mise-en-
scene included the 1927 car, perfume spray
atomiser, clothes, lighting, makeup, ornaments,
light switches/plugs.
These were all very important to contribute to
mise-en-scene due to the era in which our film
is set. The film opening would have be
ineffective without good mise-en-scene

7. I did none of the editing in the preliminary
task, so was slightly anxious that I would
find it difficult for the film opening.
However, I found using iMovie easier than
expected and feel I have really mastered it
now.
I did the majority of editing for the church
and car scene and contributed as part of
the team of the bedroom scene. Not only
have I done the cuts between shots but also
experimented with speeding up and slowing
down shots, changing lighting and filters
and using both dietetic and non-diegetic
sounds on both iMovie and GarageBand.

8. Overall, I have learnt a lot since the preliminary task. From developing
traits such as confidence to having a deep and solid knowledge of most of
the aspects of planing, research, storyboarding, music and sound,
production and post-production, I have learnt so much and feel so many of
the skills are transferable and also given me a solid standing for taking
Media Studies A2 next year.
