Evaluation question 6
What was the brief for the preliminary task?
- The brief for the preliminary task was to create clip of someone walking
into a room and having a conversation with the person in the room
whilst trying to include all of the main filming skills that we needed to be
able to use for the final piece
Why were you asked to complete the preliminary task?
- We were asked to create a short clip that included all of the main skills
that we needed to include in our finalpiece for example, 180 degree rule,
eye-line match and match on action. It was also to get us used to using
the camera, so we would have an understanding of what we would need
to include in our final piece.
What did you learn from the task?
- From doing the preliminary task I learnt how to use the rules of
continuity, 180 degree rule, eye-line match, match on action, shot
reverse shot and how to use the camera well to film long shots, close
ups, and mid shots. It also gave me an insight into the creative process
and how it can be difficult to get a good idea together, it also enabled
my group to work together filming for the first time which was good
practice for the real thing and gave me a little extra practice on top of
what I already knew using final cut to edit the clip. It also gave me an
insight into how important it is to plan because my groups plan for the
preliminary task wasn’t final when we began to film which made a little
bit more difficult than it needed to be and led to a last minute change in
idea.
How did it help you in your thriller opening work?
- Doing the preliminary task helped in making the thriller opening because
I understood how to use the camera to film different shots and angles
which I didn’t know how to do before doing the preliminary task, it also
helped because my group made sure we had a full completed plan before
filming our finalpiece so we didn’thave to problem thatwe had with our
preliminary happen during our final piece. It also helped that I had done
a bit of extra practice using finalcut when doing the preliminary piece as
I was the person editing the final piece and so it meant that I was able to
get the editing done very quick and efficiently. Having the practice of
filming together as a group also meant that we were able to
communicate and work well together when filming the final piece and
didn’t waste any time.
Preliminary VS Final task
Similarities Differences
The task The similarities between the preliminary
task and the final piece were that we had a
brief to follow in order to create the finished
piece; they both had to include certain
technical aspects and had to make sure they
were fitting to the brief.
The differences were that the final piece
was a film opening and so it had a time
limit of two minutes whereas the
preliminary task had no particular time
limit it was just meant to be short and
simple. The final piece was also a thriller
and so had to be obvious in the final piece
whereas the preliminary task had no
particular genre.
Your skills In both pieces I did the editing and also did
some of the filming and so I used the skills I
had learnt when filming and editing in the
preliminary task and remembered them in
order to make sure I filmed and edited
properly when creating the final piece.
In the final piece I was the main character
whereas in the preliminary task I was
directing/filming and so during the final
piece I didn’t use as many skills as in the
preliminary task as I only filmed a few
small parts that I wasn’t in.
Technical aspects The similarities between the preliminary
task and the final piece were that we used
both over the shoulder and close up shots in
both pieces, we also used jump cut editing
between lily entering the door from the
outside and coming in on the inside during
the preliminary task and used the same
technique when editing the clip of me being
dragged into the front door and then the
door closing in the final piece.
The differences were that we used a lot
more shots than we did in the preliminary
task, we used close ups, extreme close ups,
long shots, point of view and mid shots in
the final piece whereas in the preliminary
task we only used a few shot types that
were also used in the final piece but we
had a lot more than just those few, we
also didn’t edit in the same way as in the
final piece we added sound effects,
backing music and titles which were not
needed in the preliminary task.
Progress
I made significant progressfrom the preliminary task to the final piece, in
the preliminary task I was in charge of filming and editing, I feel like this
went well, however I found It difficult trying to complete the brief by
making sure I filmed every shot/angle properly and edited it right for
example adding jump cuts. However, when it came to the final piece I felt
that I had improved with my confidence in using the camera and using
the editing software, I wasin charge of some parts of the filming process
in my final piece and I felt like I was able to easily film shots for example
close ups and panning to a good standard. I was also in charge of editing
the piece and edited it all on my own and so I felt my skills in editing had
improved from the preliminary task where I just had to edit some clips
together to the final piece where I put together the whole opening.
