1. Evaluation – Question 2
The one and only character in our thriller opening represents a number of different social groups, we
have shown this through a number of different aspects within our thriller sequence (For example
mise en scene and camera work). The first social group that we have portrayed through our
protagonist is younger males. The protagonist is quite young, we have deliberately used a young
actor because the audience we were targeting our thriller at (Males, 16-30) are similar to him, this
therefore makes the character more relatable and creates a sense of realism to the character. By
using a younger actor we have also challenged a psychological thriller convention, in psychological
thrillers the protagonist is usually an older male (This is visible in the films ‘Taken’, and also ‘Seven’),
by challenging this convention we have made a sense of realism around our character, again
enhancing how much people can relate to the character. The camera work that we have used in the
thriller opening also tend to represent this particular social group as well, when the protagonist is
getting changed we used quite a fast paced tracking shot, this caters for the fast moving type of films
the this audience quite often require, but also allows the audience to identify with him as young
males often spend less time on activities and have lower concentration spans, therefore like to get
things done in minimal time, the fast moving activity represents the younger male social groups.
