Mountains!

Gina Veneziano
What is a Mountain?
• A mountain is technically defined as “A large natural
elevation of the earth's surface rising abruptly from
the surrounding level; a large steep hill.”
• But that’s no fun so…
• It’s basically a giant hill that takes millions of
years to form and remains in the same place
  for a long time.
How are they formed?
• There are four different kinds of
  mountains.
• -Volcanic
• -Erosional
• -Fault-block
• -Folded
• They are formed over a long period
of time when earth’s tectonic plates
  crash together!
Mt. Everest
• Mount Everest is located on the
border of Nepal and Tibet, China.
• It was formed 30-50 million years
  ago
• This mountain is 29,035 ft. tall and
it’s apart of the Himalaya mountain
chain which is 1500 meters long
• More than 2000 people have
  successfully climbed Mount
  Everest.
Environmental Effects

• Mountains affect local climate because they
direct wind depending on the size of the
  mountain or the mountain range.
• They affect global climate because they keep
certain areas of the globe colder than others
by either making it windier or keeping it cool
  at higher elevations.
