1) In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
Discuss:
1. genre
2. institution
3. reference films
4. mise-en-scene of the genre
5. props
6. clothes
7. characters
8. editing techniques
9. title
10. challenges (what is different from that genre / film-making method)
My media product is a film. The genre is based on a true
story and/or experience that many young teenage boys face
today, the war against bullying. In my film I have showed a
young boy who is a bit feminine, using his phone, catches his
eye on to another boy who is supposedly talking on the
phone. Boy 2 feels the urge to go to Boy 1 and ask him what
his problem is and in turn starts to physically harass him. The
film I made also promotes the theme of gay awareness. Boy 1
is supposedly checking Boy 2 out. Later another character is
introduced who gives Boy 1 some wistful words about being
bullied. He encourages him to stand up and they are shown
together having a good time and so on. My movie’s genre
cannot be described to a specific theme but it lays hold on
many different themes like bullying, gay awareness,
action/fighting, and since it is based on a true story it could be
even considered a documentary of some sort.
According to my genre there would be the scene of
characters one always being inferior and one always
being superior, the bully, victim and the by stander. So
in my film I was able to show 3 characters. Boy 1 who
was the victim. Boy 2 who was the bully and Boy 3 who
was the bystander of the victim. At the beginning of my
film I played a bit of mellow music to show the
inferiority of boy 1 and/or victim. And as soon as boy 2
and or the bully saw boy 1 looking at him the music
changed to punk rock music which showed the
craziness and aggressiveness through the hardcore
music. At the end of the film when the victim and the
bystander are shown an happier tone of music is
chosen to show the difference. Also boy 1 and the
bystander were both shown to be a bit feminine and so
easily connected to each other. The film also showed
gay awareness.
Props were not really used, except for two cell phones.
One of which boy 1 has in the first scene. And second
of which boy 2 has in the second scene. The characters
used in the films were young teenage boys. All dressed
according to a casual day. Boy 1 in a buttoned down
shirt and jeans, boy 2 in a plain tee and trousers, and
boy 3 in a denim shirt and jeans. All characters were
dressed to represent their character. For example Boy
1 had his hair done and was a bit more formal
compared to the other two, this was because I wanted
to show his insecurity. It showed that even though he
was in his own building he had to dress up because he
knew he would be judged. Where as the other
character, boy 2, was in casual clothes as if he had just
come out for a casual stroll, which he did.
While editing my film I used Windows Live Movie Maker,
on which I uploaded all the video shots and put them
together, I used transitions like Blur, fade to black, fade
to white and even fade from white. WLMM was quite
easy to use, it was user friendly and did no take much
time to edit the film. At first I edited the film by
trimming unnecessary scenes, also for most of the
shots I had to mute the volume because of the
unwanted noise from surroundings, also known as
diegetic sound. I replaced this diegetic sound with non-
diegetic sound from royal free music that I
downloaded. 3 music files were downloaded and
edited into the film. Each of them played a different
role and displayed a different theme according to each
scenario.
Since my film is based on true events, some movies I could
reference it to are;
The Wolf of Wall Street ,This is the story of New York stockbroker,
Jordan Belfort. From the American dream to corporate greed,
Belfort goes from penny stocks and righteousness to IPOs and a
life of corruption in the late 80s. Excess success and affluence in
his early twenties as founder of the brokerage firm Stratton
Oakmont warranted Belfort the title "The Wolf of Wall Street."
Money. Power. Women. Drugs. Temptations were for the taking
and the threat of authority was irrelevant. For Jordan and his
wolf pack, modesty was quickly deemed overrated and more
was never enough. It was distributed by Paramount Pictures.
• Another example is the series of Paranormal Activity, which again is
distributed by Paramount Pictures. Paranormal Activity is an
American supernatural horror film series, currently consisting of
five films. Created by Oren Peli, the original film was widely
released in 2009.
The films are based around a family haunted by a demonic entity, that
stalks, terrifies and ultimately murders several members of the
family, and other bystanders, during the course of the films. The
series makes use of camcorders, security cameras and other
recording devices, presenting the films as found footage. The series
has received mixed reviews, with the first and third films receiving
generally positive critical reception, while the second and the Latino
spin-off (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) films received
more lukewarm receptions and the fourth received mostly negative
reception. The series is a strong financial success, making strong
profits based on return on investment.
The title of my Film is “Unrequited Equality”.
Unrequited means not requited : not
reciprocated or returned in kind. And equality
means the state or quality of being equal. So
together it means that equality that was never
given back, or never given, or returned. This
title represents the whole story of the film.
And also shows the awareness that equality is
not being returned. The film could also be
considered a informative and moving film.
