3. CONVENTIONAL COVER FEATURES -
CONTINUEDAS INDICATED ON THE PREVIOUS SLIDE, MY MAGAZINE COVER CONFORMS TO MANY OF THE CONVENTIONAL
FEATURES OF A MUSIC MAGAZINE COVER. IT INCLUDES A MASTHEAD, MAIN IMAGE, STRAPLINES ETC. TO
DRAW READERS IN AND TO MAKE IT LOOK MORE LIKE A REAL MAGAZINE. ALTHOUGH THE POSITIONING OF
THESE FEATURES IS SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THAN THOSE OF THE BILLBOARD COVER I COMPARED IT TO, THEY
ARE ALL STILL PRESENT AND THESE FEATURES ARE POSITIONED SLIGHTLY DIFFERENTLY ON ALL MAGAZINE
COVERS.
4. MAGAZINE COVER
• MY MAGAZINE COVER DOESN’T REALLY CHALLENGE THE CONVENTIONS OF A TYPICAL MAGAZINE COVER. I TRIED TO BASE MY
COVER AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ON THE ONE I CHOSE TO COPY, SO IT’S VERY SIMILAR.
• THE INSPIRATION FOR MY COVER CAME FROM THE KIND OF MUSICI ENJOY. I DECIDED I WANTED TO MAKE IT RAP THEMED
AND THEREFORE CHOSE TO COPY A COVER THAT HAD A RAPPER ON THE FRONT.
• I ALSO THOUGHT THAT THE STYLE OF THE NME COVER WAS APPROPRIATE TO THE KIND OF IMAGE I WANTED TO CREATE,
SUCH AS THE COLOURS USED AND THE WAY THE PAGE WAS SET OUT. I LIKE THE LAY OUT OF MY COVER AND THINK THAT THE
DESIGN AND CONTENT ARE APPROPRIATE TO MY TARGET AUDIENCE OF AROUND 16-17 INTO EARLY 20’S.
• I STUCK TO THE LEFT THIRD WITH MY COVER AND PLACED MOST OF MY INFORMATION THERE SO AS NOT TO MAKE IT TOO
CROWDED OR BUSY ALL OVER THE COVER.
5. I based my contents page heavily on the NME one, only making a
few changes and additions of my own. The layout of the image is
slightly different as well as the spacing being different due to the
NME contents page being wider.
CONTENTS PAGE
My contents page essentially follows the conventional
layout of other contents pages as I have split the
information into thirds and used an image, as well as a
main title to catch the readers attention and let them
know what it is. The colour scheme also seems to be
similar, mostly using blacks and reds.
6. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
For my double page spread, I copied the way the quote was done in the
NME DPS as I thought it fit the style of my magazine and would look good.
I had to change the way I did the pictures as I wanted to use the pictures
of two people as opposed to one, as well as it being difficult for me to
remove the background, therefore I chose to include two pictures on
the right and leave the backgrounds on. I chose to give them a drop
shadow to create a ‘snapshot’ type effect to justify the way I had set
them out, as well as this fitting with the article and the content.
My double page spread bears a lot of similar features as most magazine’s
DPS’s. It contains a main image(s) and has a plain background so it’s not too
busy and is therefore easier to read. It also has a large quote which stands
out and catches the readers’ attention. The
images are appropriate to the article and I tried
to coincide both so that my pictures would be
specifically appropriate for the content.
