This document provides an overview of different language identification methods. It summarizes three main approaches: (1) common words and unique letter combinations, (2) a statistical approach using Markov models introduced by Ted Dunning, and (3) an N-gram approach introduced by Cavnar et al. For each approach, it provides a brief explanation of the methodology and discusses evaluation results from relevant studies. The document serves as an introduction to language identification methods to be tested on three freely available language identification programs in subsequent sections.
