Links to ‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’
Genre: Horror/Thriller.
The movie is shot with very dimly lit lighting. This gives an eerie feel
the piece in its entirety and this is also a convention of thrillers. It also
means that in the scenes that are candle lit (Church scenes) they emit
a sense of warmth which contrasts against what is actually occurring
within the scene. To the left is an example from a church scene within
‘The Exorcism of Emily Rose’ and below that is an image from our own
film opening that happened to be extremely similar.
We attracted our audience by adhering to the conventions of thrillers. This meant that fans of thrillers would
subsequently enjoy our film and if people were looking for either horrors/thrillers or gothic themed movies, ours
would be suggested.
Similarities: Religious imagery and ties.
Our movies have a crucial similarity of being very religiously orientated. The main character
is Father Moore who is a priest. Emily Rose is also often seen visiting a church. Emily Rose,
is said to be possessed by a demon/s which is religiously orientated due to demons being
from Hell and can only be removed from a possessed entity via an exorcism that must be
done by a trained priest. The religious ties are not only effective because the religious
symbolism used and religious acts are understood universally, as demons have been
recorded in all cultures. But they are also effective because people may be curious about an
alternative side of religion.
Links to ‘Legion’
Genre: Action/ Horror/ Fantasy.
‘Legion’ is a supernatural apocalyptic movie
which is similar to our movie which has
supernatural and apocalyptic undertones. As well
as the horror / thriller genre, we also have the
supernatural aspect to our movie which attracts
other types of audiences. The supernatural
aspect is just an undertone in our film whereas it
is very prominent in ‘Legion’.The supernatural
aspects aren’t exactly clear within the opening,
however they would be included in the full
movie. This is evident when you read the overall
plot outline.
Similarities: Controversial Antagonist.
In both ‘Legion’ and ‘Anti-Christ’, God is the
antagonist. This could potentially be very
controversial and blasphemous. If we were to
make the entire movie, we would have to be
very careful surrounding this issue. However,
in our opening it is not directly addressed.
Music
The music in ‘Anti-Christ’ and ‘Legion are very
different. For example, in this fight scene, the
music is very fast with high strings and a very
prominent bass. Drums are prominent within the
music and so it sounds slightly tribal. There are
also tribal shouts in the background which
reinforces the aggression of the fight and
reinforces the idea of tribal sound. Whereas in
my movie opening, the movie is quite electronic
as opposed to orchestral. Although, I love the
effect it has and is also very similar to the movie
opening of ‘Wold War Z’.

Unique Selling Point
Our unique selling point is that our central protagonist is an alternative representation of
Jesus Christ. Personally, I have never come across a film that has done this, although,
there still may be one. However, I believe it is a unique idea to portray Jesus the way we
have done, as a female. Despite God being the antagonist of our plotline which is
something that has been recreated in the movie ‘Legion’,Christ at war with God is
something I have never seen visually represented by any form of media. The rarity of the
idea is what would make it appeal to audiences, as they probably would never have seen
this visually represented either. I think audiences would also be very intrigued by the idea
of a female Christ. Personally, if I had the ability to create the entire movie, I would make
the character a black female instead of a white female. My reasons for this have been
written within my Character Profiles for my film opening.
In recent years, a lot of thrillers are very modernised and surround modern issues such as
crime, politics etc. For example, ‘GoneGirl’, ‘The Lives of Others’ and ‘TinkerTailor Solider
Spy’. I wished to dig down into old religious roots that had seemingly been forgotten by
thrillers but still relatively popular in terms of horrors. However, horrors primarily focus on
the demons and exorcising aspects that religion holds. I feels as though I achieved this.
Attracting the Audience
I attracted our audience by introducing a unique idea to them which would be both intriguing and
exciting as it is not something that has specifically been done before. Attracting the audience is
evidently crucial to a movies success and it was even more important for my movie as my audience
questionnaire suggested that very few people of the younger generation watchThrillers. I aimed to
change their mind of that by creating a movie that is all intriguing, visually stimulating and
challenges peoples views.
Addressing the Audience
I addressed the audience by using a central protagonist and antagonist that are universally
recognised and understood but with an alternative edge. This was it was able to draw in a wide
audience without people thinking it is going to be a boring religiously orientated movie. The central
protagonist is a young girl and so that relates well with a younger audience so that they are able to
identify or even aspire to the character. This is something that was suggested important by my
audience questionnaire results.
