CCR Task 1: How does your product use or challenge
conventions and how does it represent social groups
or issues.
Genre + Genre Conventions
• -My group and I created an opening title sequence called , “In The Way”. For this we decided to make the genre a Romantic Drama.
• -Overcoming obstacles
• -Emotional highslows
• -Character connection
Film Comparison
• Throughout the process of creating our opening title sequence, there
were many films that we looked which held similarities to our idea and
inspired us to reach our final outcome.
• These are some of the films we looked at.
• -”Passengers” directed by Morten Tyldum
• -”Moonlight” directed by Barry Jenkins
• -”The Wilds” directed by Sarah Streicher
• -”Blue Is The Warmest Colour” directed by Abdellatif Kechiche
• -”Call Me By Your Name” directed by Luca Guadagnino
• -”Miseducation Of Cameron Post” directed by Desiree Akhavan
Call Me By Your
Name
• One of the movies I will be comparing to
my opening title sequence is “Call Me By
Your Name”, Directed by Luca Guadagnino
and made in 2018. The clip of the movie I am
using to compare with is
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7y26J
Pdc2o.
• A similar aspect we have to the movie
“Call Me By Your Name” is the forbidden
love of falling for someone you know you
should not be with. In the clip I am using
from “Call Me By Your Name”, We see the
boys start to express their feelings towards
each other. This is similar to my opening title
sequence as we see the girls start to show
their feelings together when sat in the fort.
Comparison
The wilds
Another compassion to my opening title sequence is The Wilds. The Wilds (2020) is a drama tv series
from amazon prime created by Sarah Streicher. The reason I am comparing The Wilds to my opening
title sequence is because of the innocent lesbian romance shown in the Wilds. Both share the idea of
religion and the forbidden love of falling for someone.
Character Introduction
In our opening title sequence, The Vicar is shown as a
highly respected character. This is portrayed through
the camera angles and the families reactions. When the
Vicar first walks into our sequence, we don’t see his
face straight away so we automatically look at the
families expression. The families facial expressions
shows that they respect him and fear him at the same
time. We used a low angle camera shot when the vicar
angrily and aggressively says his lines. We did this to
show that he has a higher authority than the girl.
Character Introduction
• In our opening title sequence, the mum and dad are introduced as extremely religious. Both the
characters are first shown with a close up of their chest, while performing a religious act such as the Mum
holding a cross and the dad crossing himself. The mum and dad are also shown as background characters
as they are both always stood behind their daughter. Although there are shown as background characters
it is made clear that the exorcism would not be taking place with out them and their beliefs.
Character Introduction
In our opening title sequence, The second girl is seen less in the
sequence however holds great importance to the story. She is
seen on the right side throughout the entirety of the sequence,
as we read right to left we end up on her which could portray
the idea that she is moving forwards in her life whereas the
other girl is being held back by her family. She is also seen as
bolder when making moves with the other girl, showing she is
less nervous about the situation.
Character
Introduction
In our opening title sequence, The
first girl is introduced as the main
character as she appears in nearly all
the shots, the story revolves around
her and she is placed in the centre of
most shots. Throughout the fort
shots, she is seen to be more nervous
compared to the other girl. This could
represent the idea that she is aware
of what might happen to her if
anyone found out who she really was.
During the exorcism shots, she is
shown as scared and upset. This could
bring sympathy to the audience as
they feel bad about what is she going
through.
Titles and Narrative
The narrative and titles in our opening title
sequence are easy to follow and use the
traditional format for titles. My group and I
placed the titles in a way that it would not take
away from the action happening on the screen.
We played around with each title but ended up
placing it in the area that had plenty empty
space. We chose a white simple font to ensure
that it was easy to read as well as not distracting
the audience. We spread the titles out to made
the past of the opening title sequence seem
slower.
Challenging religious beliefs within
my opening title sequence.
• In my opening title sequence, me and group introduced the influence of
Christianity and its negative effect on the LGBT+ community. We have
introduced the extreme version of Christianity through the parents, the
vicar and the exorcism. The use of the exorcism was to rid the girl of her
gayness and make her “normal” again, this is an example of the parents
religion and how strong their beliefs are. My group and I researched into
true stories regarding the effects of religion on real life people. During this
research we found true events of parents inviting a vicar into their home to
perform this on their children just because of their sexuality. Our opening
title sequence challenges the radical Christians within the religious
community by portraying a young lesbian relationship in a positive way that
enforces the idea that there is nothing wrong with being gay and that love is
love.
Social
Groups/Issues
Social groups: One social
group we have in our
opening title sequence is
teenage girls in the 80s.
Social groups: One
social group we have
covered in our opening
title sequence is the
LGBT+ community.
Issue: one issue we
have explored in our
opening title sequence
is Christianity.
Social Groups
• Camera: To show the social group of teenage girls in the
80s, we used a wide shot from straight on. This shot allows
the audience to see both girls in focus and due to the
positioning of the characters it makes the viewer question if
there are only friends. The background of this shot is out of
focus, which makes the subject the girls as there are in the
foreground.
• Editing: The editing used for this shot is slower compared
to others in the fort. This is because we wanted to focus on
the intimacy and allow the audience to have time to connect
with the characters before we build up the tension in the rest
of the sequence.
• Sound: The non diegetic lyrics over this shot is “sometimes
when this place gets find of empty”, This could represent the
idea that teenagers can often form a intense relationship and
that they can fill empty without each other near by.
• Mise En Scene: The characters outfits represent the fashion
teenagers worn in the 80s. The dusty pink jumper polo neck
jumper worn by the blonde girl is a clear example of common
fashion within the religious community. The girl with darker
hair is wearing a dark navy crewneck which shows she comes
from a wealthy conservative upbringing in the 80s.
Theories Of Representation • In my groups and I
opening title sequence,
the theorist Strauss was
represented. Strauss
theory is the idea of
Binary opposition, good vs
bad. This is shown in my
opening title sequence
through the girl and the
vicar as well as the
contrast with the exorcism
and love scenes. The vicar
is portrayed as the ”bad”
guy and the girl is shown
as the ”good” girl.
Adhered or Subvert
Adhered -
Our opening title sequence is set in the 80s, this is how we were able to involve the exorcism scene. If
we set it in modern time, we could not be able to involve the exorcism scene as its now very
uncommon.
Subvert-
Our opening title sequence subverts stereotypes, this is because the girls aren’t “basic” as they
commonality are in films. We made our girls come from interesting backgrounds.

  • 8. Character Introduction In our opening title sequence, The Vicar is shown as a highly respected character. This is portrayed through the camera angles and the families reactions. When the Vicar first walks into our sequence, we don’t see his face straight away so we automatically look at the families expression. The families facial expressions shows that they respect him and fear him at the same time. We used a low angle camera shot when the vicar angrily and aggressively says his lines. We did this to show that he has a higher authority than the girl.
  • 9. Character Introduction • In our opening title sequence, the mum and dad are introduced as extremely religious. Both the characters are first shown with a close up of their chest, while performing a religious act such as the Mum holding a cross and the dad crossing himself. The mum and dad are also shown as background characters as they are both always stood behind their daughter. Although there are shown as background characters it is made clear that the exorcism would not be taking place with out them and their beliefs.
  • 10. Character Introduction In our opening title sequence, The second girl is seen less in the sequence however holds great importance to the story. She is seen on the right side throughout the entirety of the sequence, as we read right to left we end up on her which could portray the idea that she is moving forwards in her life whereas the other girl is being held back by her family. She is also seen as bolder when making moves with the other girl, showing she is less nervous about the situation.
  • 11. Character Introduction In our opening title sequence, The first girl is introduced as the main character as she appears in nearly all the shots, the story revolves around her and she is placed in the centre of most shots. Throughout the fort shots, she is seen to be more nervous compared to the other girl. This could represent the idea that she is aware of what might happen to her if anyone found out who she really was. During the exorcism shots, she is shown as scared and upset. This could bring sympathy to the audience as they feel bad about what is she going through.
  • 12. Titles and Narrative The narrative and titles in our opening title sequence are easy to follow and use the traditional format for titles. My group and I placed the titles in a way that it would not take away from the action happening on the screen. We played around with each title but ended up placing it in the area that had plenty empty space. We chose a white simple font to ensure that it was easy to read as well as not distracting the audience. We spread the titles out to made the past of the opening title sequence seem slower.
  • 13. Challenging religious beliefs within my opening title sequence. • In my opening title sequence, me and group introduced the influence of Christianity and its negative effect on the LGBT+ community. We have introduced the extreme version of Christianity through the parents, the vicar and the exorcism. The use of the exorcism was to rid the girl of her gayness and make her “normal” again, this is an example of the parents religion and how strong their beliefs are. My group and I researched into true stories regarding the effects of religion on real life people. During this research we found true events of parents inviting a vicar into their home to perform this on their children just because of their sexuality. Our opening title sequence challenges the radical Christians within the religious community by portraying a young lesbian relationship in a positive way that enforces the idea that there is nothing wrong with being gay and that love is love.
  • 14. Social Groups/Issues Social groups: One social group we have in our opening title sequence is teenage girls in the 80s. Social groups: One social group we have covered in our opening title sequence is the LGBT+ community. Issue: one issue we have explored in our opening title sequence is Christianity.
  • 15. Social Groups • Camera: To show the social group of teenage girls in the 80s, we used a wide shot from straight on. This shot allows the audience to see both girls in focus and due to the positioning of the characters it makes the viewer question if there are only friends. The background of this shot is out of focus, which makes the subject the girls as there are in the foreground. • Editing: The editing used for this shot is slower compared to others in the fort. This is because we wanted to focus on the intimacy and allow the audience to have time to connect with the characters before we build up the tension in the rest of the sequence. • Sound: The non diegetic lyrics over this shot is “sometimes when this place gets find of empty”, This could represent the idea that teenagers can often form a intense relationship and that they can fill empty without each other near by. • Mise En Scene: The characters outfits represent the fashion teenagers worn in the 80s. The dusty pink jumper polo neck jumper worn by the blonde girl is a clear example of common fashion within the religious community. The girl with darker hair is wearing a dark navy crewneck which shows she comes from a wealthy conservative upbringing in the 80s.
  • 16. Theories Of Representation • In my groups and I opening title sequence, the theorist Strauss was represented. Strauss theory is the idea of Binary opposition, good vs bad. This is shown in my opening title sequence through the girl and the vicar as well as the contrast with the exorcism and love scenes. The vicar is portrayed as the ”bad” guy and the girl is shown as the ”good” girl.
  • 17. Adhered or Subvert Adhered - Our opening title sequence is set in the 80s, this is how we were able to involve the exorcism scene. If we set it in modern time, we could not be able to involve the exorcism scene as its now very uncommon. Subvert- Our opening title sequence subverts stereotypes, this is because the girls aren’t “basic” as they commonality are in films. We made our girls come from interesting backgrounds.
