MAIN TASK EVALUATION
     Jack O'Connor
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?

           Kill Bill vol.1

In horrors and thrillers the villain is usually male,
and often with a female victim so we decided
to break the convention and have a female
              villain with a male victim
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?

           Kill Bill vol.1

Another common feature is the anonymity of the
villain, present in the scene but their identity
hidden. This is something we used to increase
              suspense and mystery
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?

                                     Many contemporary films
                                        use black and white
                                       sequences to indicate
that that scene is in the
                                      past. This is something
Kill Bill vol.1 we incorporated into our
                                                 film

       Texas Chainsaw Massacre
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?

                                           In our film we created
                                                a typical horror
                                               setting; dark and
                                                  mysterious
       Nosferatu
                       Frankenstein

 We also adopted the
 classic feature of the
   framing shot of the
villain as they enter the
  scene to signify the
importance and power
     of the character
How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The main character in our film
is in his late teens, he
   represents young people,
      males in particular, as
     drinking to excess and
        being careless and
    dangerous. Young male
drivers are the most likely to
   have a road accident and
    we used our character to
      represent this and the
How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Women are represented by the female villain as
strong and powerful, not merely passive
characters, being as equally capable of violence
as men are. She represents the break down of
                 gender scripts.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

After researching I believe that Lionsgate UK would
distribute our product. It is the UK branch of Lionsgate,
which is a reputable company with a history of dealing
with horror and thrillers (the Saw films and The
Descent), and deals with independent British films
Who would be the audience for your media product?

As our research showed us, the largest group that attend
the cinema is 15-34 year olds. Our film, being a horror,
would be an '18' rating so our audience would be 18-34
but more geared towards the younger population. It is not
a specialist film so it is targeted at all classes and genders
How did you attract/address your audience?

We aimed to attract our audience by using a young main
character that they may be familiar with or be able to
relate to in some way. As research found that the
storyline was one of the most significant attractions to
a film we decided to add a twist and make our villain
female and create an original narrative. We also raised
issues such as youth drinking and drink driving that the
audience may be familiar with. We kept the scenes in
residential areas so that it felt realistic, as if it could
                    really have happened
How did you attract/address your audience?

                             In our survey we
                                  found male
                                 actors were
                                more popular
                                 than female
                              actresses so we
                              kept our leading
                                role as male
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of
                  constructing this product?

I have become aware of the way equipment such as the
video camera and the microphone operate and am now a
competent user of both. The technology I used most
though was the digital software on the Apple mac. I am
now fully adept in the use of Final Cut Pro, Garageband,
and Motion after lengthy post-production and editing
sessions. This process has equipped me with the skills I
need to create further media products. It has also given me
an appreciation of the amount work that goes into the
production of a film, or any media product
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt
in the progression to the full product?

The preliminary task really laid the foundations of the skills
needed to complete the final product, introducing me to the
new technology and software that I was previously
unfamiliar with. With the progression to the main task I got
an appreciation of the importance of good organisation,
communication and time management as things can easily
destabilise and be detrimental to production. I also learned
the importance of working as a team as in the preliminary
task we sometimes didn’t work together as a group which is
really vital for our work to be effective. And as much as I
would like to always work on my own ideas the main task
was really an example of how co-operation and sometimes
compromise leads to a successful project
