- The document discusses a media product created by students that aims to portray teenagers and high school relationships and conflicts in the style of the movie Mean Girls.
- It seeks to represent both male and female social groups through typical stereotypes seen in movies like Mean Girls.
- The target audience is mainly teenagers who will relate to the conventions and characters portrayed.
- The students think their media product would be best distributed by Paramount Pictures, known for similar teen movies, and should get an international release in theaters before being released on DVD to reduce piracy.
2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Our protagonist character being a teenage, therefore the use
of teenagers in our cast.
We try to portray our main character in this movie to what
Regina is Mean girls is portrayed as. In Mean girls Regina is
portrayed to be upper class, with good fashion sense, and as
you can see in our poster, we tried to replicate our ideas in our
movie.
3. How doesYour Media product represent particular social
groups?
In our movie we tried to represent
both males and females as typically
as we could, for example in the
extract our main character is seen to
be scratching out and complaining
about another female student,
something very typical between
female, where they are bitchy about
each other, and very territorial with
men. For example In Mean girls
there is a conflict over a guy, where
both females try to win him over.
4. Who is our targeted audience?
Our main audiences in this movie is mainly
teenagers. Due to some of the typical
conventions which we used in this movie Teenagers
such as relationships, the use of teenagers
in the cast, and stereotypes such as the
‘popular characters’, the use of these
conventions attracts teenagers, as they
can relate themselves to many of the
characters represented in the movie.
Although if looked at specifically gender, I
would say that this movie would attract a
female audience more than it would to a
male. Since much of the conventions used
in our extract are to do with females, the
chances of having a big male audience is
quite low.
Since our movie will most probably attract
females and teenagers we loose a majority
of our audience.
5. What kind of media institution might distribute your media
product and why?
I think that our movie would be best suited to be
distributed by ‘Paramount Pictures’. Paramount Pictures
is one of the major distribution companies which is
available right now. I think that due to its name and its
top grossing movies, our movie would do great under
their rank. Not only that but due to its success with
Mean girls, and The Napoleon Dynamite I think that
Paramount Pictures would be successful again with
distributing our movie.
To gain more success I would say that this movie should
be released internationally, by doing this piracy can be
reduced, as If we were to release it just in the UK, it will
get quickly pirated in other major countries like US,
where we should get most of our income and profits
from.
I think that our product should be first distributed
thought cinemas first, then giving it 1 or two months we
can release it on DVD or blue ray. By doing this we evade
high levels of privacy, since pirated copies will get low
quality movies, this way giving the DVD or blue ray 1
month keeps people from pirating the movie, whereas if
we were to release the movie both in cinemas and DVD’s
the chances of the movies getting pirated in high quality
become higher, meaning less people will tend to go to
the cinemas and watch it.
6. How should it be distributed?
To gain more success I would say that this
movie should be released internationally, What the Uk’s film industry say the
by doing this piracy can be reduced, as If government should do to tackle piracy:
we were to release it just in the UK, it will
get quickly pirated in other major countries

income and profits from.

7. How do we use mis-en-scene to attract our
audience?
During planning we had to make
sure that our mis-en-scene is
something that audience can relate
to, therefore before starting our
extract, we included mis-en-scene
which could help us attract our
audience. Much of the mis-en-scene
we used is revolving around props,
for example, in our extract we
included a lot of school stationary,
such as pencil cases and books.
The Use of Phones and Ipod’s
Sound track, being very Upbeat and
Rock.
8. Different Media used to attract our audience:
The use of various media to attract our
audience such as:
•Posters – To attract a more wider
audience, and to simply entice who we
aim to target as our audience.
•Facebook pages – This along with our
blog used to keep our audience, up to
date with our progress.
•Blogs – keeping audience upto date,
and informed.
•Websites – This gives us a chance to
reflect on what our audience has to
say about our movie, and posters.
By doing this we attract a wider
audience.
9. What I have learnt over this course:
New programs and different types
of media learnt during this course:
Imovie – new editing features, and
overall how to edit a movie.
Premier Pro -
Macs – Since I have never used macs
before doing this course it gave me
the opportunity to learn how to use
more advnaced computers.
10. Different types of media used:
During the time we were making our extract we
used many media options, to either help us produce
our movie, or other to help us promote and
distribute our movie.
Media used for production:
•Cameras
•Imovie
•Garage Band
•Photoshop
Media used to promote the movie:
•Dreamweaver (Used to create our website)
•Facebook (Used to keep our fans updated)
•Wordpress (For our day to day progress)
•Website Hosts
11. Marketing strategies
These two are our main marketing strategy, one is the
We used various marketing poster which takes no cost to make, and is also very
strategies to help promote our efficient, as it will attract audience very quickly with its
bright colours. And the second is a website, as many
movie, since marketing is very cheap teenagers nowadays use the internet, we thought
what better way to keep our audience entertained and
yet efficient, we used two of the uptodate on our products and movies then a website?
best options to help market our The website cost nothing to make, and also nothing to
host, as it is very easy to find cheap or free hosts, who
movie: will host your website, for very efficient costs.
12. What to do with a bigger budget?
With a bigger budget, our movie could benefit a lot,
if we were to have an unlimited budget these are the
following thing I would probably spend more money Instead of
on:
•Better sound equipment
•Better more advanced programs
•Advancement of our website (Better domain)
•Better cameras
13. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in
the progression?
Although we had to work with amateur equipment,
we thought that our work may not be the best, but
the jump we have taken from what our preliminary
task was created like to what our opening sequence
is, we have learnt many more new techniques and
ideas.
Even though the equipment we used in our
preliminary task is similar to what we used in our
Opening sequence, the development in our opening
sequence is much more greater.
We have thought about and presented much more
conventions in our opening sequence than we have
in our Preliminary task. With a lot more planning
also put into our opening sequence, we have
realized how important the planning stage can
impact on what and how we do things later.
We were able to learn new camera techniques, since
our preliminary task was very rigid, and quite basic,
It showed how we grew as a team to create
something better.
14. What we could have done better?
As we started our second course which was our What went well What could have been better
Movie intro, we realized that we have to make sure
that our planning was as good as it can be, since our We worked well as a team We Could have managed our
planning was not that good in our preliminary task, time more efficiently
we decided that we have to give our planning our

most attention if we had to improve our shooting,
and other main stages. As our preliminary task was well.
not the best creation, we had to make sure that we
choose appropriate shooting location and dates, to A good narrative
shoot our sequence, which we had previously failed
to do so in our preliminary task. By planning ahead Good use of technology
we were able to leave a lot of time to discuss our
plot, and mainly more time for editing, our final
piece.
I think that from what our first piece used to be to
what our edited piece is, has a great difference,
since I get a lot of time to experiment with iMovie, I
learnt many of its editing abilities, therefore giving
us a much more appreciative final piece. Not only
that but many software’s such as Garage Band
allowed us to insert various different types of music
in our sequence, therefore increasing the quality of
our work.
