Evaluating the school magazine
The school magazine which I designed challenges the conventions of real media products
because I wanted my product to be different to other ones similar to it. For example my
magazine was full of colourful pictures and words unlike other magazine covers which have
a colour scheme of only one or two colours. I did this because I wanted it to stand out
amongst the other magazines. I used two photoshoped images which I made myself and put
them on the front cover of the magazine because they looked like they were from cartoons.
I decided to use them on the front cover because my target audience which is mostly
children and teenagers would find the magazine appealing because they often like bright
colours in magazines and books etc. This made my product contrast with others because
most magazine use photographs that look more realistic when they’re edited. Also another
point is this product would only be sold in the school, not in shops where you can buy most
magazines.
The product is targeted towards a younger audience between the ages of 12-16 because
they are the ones who are more likely to read it because they attend the school where the
products are sold. I used very big and colourful images because I know my target audience
would prefer it to lots of text and very little pictures. I also made the text in the masthead
comic sand size 40 because again the comic style is well suited for my target audience. The
captions at the bottom of the page were all in various font sizes and styles to make it
unique. I decided to put captions on the front cover because then the reader could find out
some information about the articles to persuade them to purchase the product.
During the construction of my product I learnt a few useful processes of how to edit my
photographs. I learnt how to make the images look like cartoons by using the filter option I
then changing it to poster edges. After I did that I changed the colours by using the bucket
tool to fill in the blank spaces. However sometimes it didn’t work because not all the lines
were enclosed, so I had to fill in the gaps using the brush or pencil tool. Once I did that I had
a finished image that looked like a cartoon.
Overall I felt my product had some strengths but also a few weaknesses. Firstly I believe my
product would appeal to the majority of my target audience because I made it child friendly
by using lots of bright coloured words and images, also there was less writing than pictures
on the front cover which is a good point because there should never be too much writing.
The layout of the magazine cover was also one of its strength because the masthead was in
the correct place and the captions and images were all well organised.
However, some adults could be put off buying it because there are too much colourful
images and texts which would put and adult off buying it because it appears to be childish.
Also I should have included a catchy slogan because this will help persuade my audience to
purchase it.
