How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages.
RESEARCH & PLANNING The planning and research section was mainly focusing on primary and secondary research into posters, websites or trailers. For the secondary research, which I carried out first, I looked at websites such as UK Tribes.com for information about the different audience sub-culture and backgrounds, and found our which people would be more inclined to see a horror film. I used Google.co.uk as a main source of information to find other information about the genre. Such as the genre conventions and film posters for the Ancillary 2 research. The site flickr.com also came in useful whist writing about the target audiences and culture backgrounds because everything in our work has to be copyright free and that site is a place where all the images uploaded are sectioned as ‘copyright free’. I also used Youtube.com for my secondary research to look at different trailers during the Main Task. I created videos on my findings on the posters and websites within an editing program called Sony Vegas because that is the software I’m most comfortable using in regards to editing. The primary research was collected on word documents as well as different forms of technical equipment. During the Main Task section we wanted to collect people opinions about the genre, to do this we decided it would be good to record their answers so our WordPress blogs would be more multi-media. We recorded their answers using a digital camera or a smaller camera known as a flip cam . All the answers were collected and put together in Windows Movie Maker to make one single video file. I also used the social networking site Facebook to get peoples views and instant feedback on ideas/narratives from the intended target audience. The WordPress blog was a good tool overall because it allowed me to keep all my work over this project all together and viewable.
CONSTRUCTION For the Ancillary 1 poster production I used Adobe Photoshop to create the overall poster. I also found websites through Google to find out some download font sites such as dafont.com that worked in the software program. The site allowed me to find different fonts that I feel give off the sort of horror vibe. On my poster all but one of the fonts is taken from that website. During the Ancillary 2 website production I created the website on Adobe Dreamweaver , which was a new program for me to use. This allowed me to create, link and colour various webpages till I felt that it would be appropriate for the genre specified. I used Adobe Photoshop to edited the original images I had taken and to make rollover buttons for my website. The rollover buttons would work by changing colour when the user scrolled the mouse over them, showing that it linked to another webpage. Whist creating my website I came across the website Aviary.com which is a site that features copyright free sounds (this would come in handy whist editing the trailer). The construction of the trailer was where the main bulk of the technology was used. Most of the scenes were filmed on a Sony DV Camera , aside from one filming night when we used a larger black camera because all those cameras were being used to ‘capture’ other peoples footage. Aside from the camera we book out other camera equipment such as a tripod , a dolly and an outdoor light – for the night shots, also a boom mic to capture the sounds or dialogue in some of the scenes. During the recording process we used a digital camera to record our day-to-day filming actives, sort of as a filming log. Which was carried on into the editing process of the trailer. Those videos were editing in Windows Movie Maker because it is a lot easier to use than Sony Vegas and because it is a pre-installed Windows program all the girls had it on their home computers. We then put the videos onto our group media account that we created on Youtube to host our videos.  To editing the trailer we used a program called Adobe Premier , which again, was a new program for me to use. Whist editing we realized that we needed to a record a narrative and one line in particular to be re-recorded due to background noise. To do this we got our actors and recorded their dialogue within Adobe Audition , so that the sound quality would match that of the film quality. We also used Adobe Photoshop and Flash to create our production and distribution logos at the beginning of the trailer.
EVALUATION The technology and software used during the evaluation stage was pretty much the same as the research and planning section. As a whole we asked the class how they felt about our trailer and what they liked/disliked about it, which we then uploaded onto our youtube account. I also got additional feedback through Facebook asking some of my friends what they thought about the trailer. Aside from the trailer I had gotten feedback on my poster and website during the time of creation from my teacher telling me what I could do to improve both of the pieces. Overall, I feel that media technology contributed a big part in my research & planning, construction and evaluation stages. I think that if I didn’t have to software, websites or equipment that I used that I wouldn’t of been able to complete any of my pieces from the get go.
