Globally, over 500 universities now offer data science courses at undergraduate or postgraduate level and, in research-intensive universities, these courses are typically underpinned by academic research in statistics, machine learning and computer science departments and, increasingly, in multidisciplinary data science institutes. Much has been written about the academic challenges of data science from the perspective of its core academic disciplines and from its application domains, ranging from sciences and engineering through to arts and humanities. However, relatively little has been written about the institutional information technology (IT) support challenges entailed by this rapid growth in data science. This paper sets out some of these IT challenges and examines competing support strategies, service design and financial models through the lens of academic IT support services.

In 2009, Florida Atlantic University (FAU) received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to create the site of the Center for Advanced Knowledge Enablement (CAKE) as an Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) that provides a framework for interaction between university faculty and industry in the areas of information technology, communication, and computing. LexisNexis is currently one of the CAKE industry members. In this session, we will talk about the significance of the membership, joint accomplishments, contributions back to the HPCC Systems community, as well as sharing experiences on including a Data Intensive Computing program in the FAU curriculum.

Instruments and simulations are producing more and more volume; data can be shared, mined, cited, preserved… They are a great asset, but they are facing risks: we can miss storage, we can lose them, they can be misused,… To start this session, we will review why it is important to manage research data and how to do this by maintaining a Data Management Plan. This will be based on the best practices from EUDAT H2020 project and European Commission recommendation. During the second part we will interactively draft a DMP for a given use case.

- 5. A growing divide between those that realise the potential of that data, and those with the technical skills to process, analyse and predict from it.
- 7. It is also estimated that there will be a 160% increase in demand for Big Data specialists between 2013-2020 to 346,000 new jobs. Big Data has the potential to directly contribute €206 billion to the EU economy by 2020. over the past 5 years the demand for Big Data staff in the UK alone had risen tenfold and currently 77% of Big Data roles are hard to fill.

- 11. European Data Science Academy (EDSA) will establish a virtuous learning production cycle for Data Science, and will: 1. Analyse the sector specific skillsets for data analysts across Europe’s main industrial sectors; 2. Develop modular and adaptable curricula to meet these Data Science needs; and 3. Deliver training supported by multiplatform and multilingual learning resources based on these curricula.
