Accurate  and  comprehensive  informa4on  about   pa4ent’s  health  during  medical  visits           Informa(on  to  help  doctors:   -­‐  to  diagnose  medical  condi(ons    sooner  and   more  accurately   -­‐  reduce  medical  errors   -­‐  provide  safer  care  at  lower  costs     Electronic  Health  Records  (EHRs)  
  • 6. Social  Media  and  Health   •  More  than  40%  of  consumers  say  that  informa(on   found  via  social  media  affects  the  way  they  deal  with   their  health   •  90%  of  respondents  from  18  to  24  years  of  age  said   they  would  trust  medical  informa4on  shared  by   others  on  their  social  media  networks  (Pew  Internet)     •  60%  of  doctors  say  SM          improves  the  quality          of  care  delivered  to  pa(ents  
  • 7. Some  opportuni4es  using  SM  in  clinical   environments   Social  Media  exchanges   could  add  important  and   interes(ng  informa(on  to   the  care  process     MD  could  learn  more  about   how  pa(ents  are  feeling,  how   they  are  responding  to  a  new   medica(on,  and  whether  they   adhere  to  a  certain     care  plan  or  not   Social  Media  can  be  used  as   a  means  of  improving   interac(on  with  coworkers    
  • 8. How  to  manage  SM  in  EHR?      Should  Facebook  or  TwiDer  be  integrated  in      EHR,  as  they  are?  Or  Is  it  of  interest  some      level  of  integra(on  of  Facebook/TwiMer-­‐      like  communica(on  within  EHRs     Is  it  necessary  to  apply  a  specific  design?    (Should  a   Facebook  content  “like”  be  considered  a  record?)       Best  prac4ces  have  not  been  widely  established

General  Considera(ons   •  The  informa4on  should  be  supplemental  not  replacing   the  data  obtained  directly  through  inpa4ent  visits   •  Define  and  determine  use  policies  (both  caregivers  and   pa(ents),  SM  content  management  and  legal  aspects                 •  Establish  under  what  circumstances  (in  what  context)  and   purposes  SM  should  be  used  (emergency-­‐type  problems,   (me  monitoring  of  these  content  and  channels  not  24/7)
