ETHEL MAY

ESTER

We based our main character on Ester, from Orphan. She is a 33 year old woman
disguised as a 12 year old girl, she appears sweet and innocent as a first
impression but she is really a vicious psychopathic murderer. The main character in
our story also appears sweet and innocent but brutally murders her own mother.
Ethel-May and Ester
Ethel-may and Ester are very similar for a variety of reasons, firstly their
background. Both are without parents, although Ethel-May has a
mother, emotionally she is very separated from her. Both are outcast from society
as they behave differently, independently, don’t dress and behave like all the
other little girls. Behavior wise they are both very independent, this is partly
because the have no choice as they are not included with other girls anyway, but
also because they do as they please on there own, not much of talkers but do a
lot on their own, preferring their own company.
The way the talk is also similar. Neither are panicked, put emotion or emphasis
into anything the say. When Ethel-may is on the phone and telling the emergency
lady her mum is dead she speaks as though unbothered, the same way Ester
does when she talks to anyone.

However they are quite different in the fact that Ethel–May is quiet and unsure
and a lost little girl, not frightened but unsure of what she wants, as she kills her
mother but then calls the police. Whereas Ester knows what she wants from the
very start and knows who she has to kill and what she has to do to get it.
What are the social groups represented in
terms of gender, age, class, race .etc?
Our Character Ethel-May socially is fairly unhappy, due to the fact her Dad left her
and she has always felt distant from her Mother and they often conflict. Due to
Ethel-Mays abusive and lonely upbringing after her dad abusing then leaving the
family Ethel-May has a low self-esteem and no friends, she is independent and
bottles up all her emotions. At school she is ridiculed for being unpopular and quiet.
As a young girl few people listen to her take her seriously because of young
inexperienced age. As a girl she is expected to follow the female norms of being
girly, giggly and bubbly and enjoys playing with other girls and but she doesn't
follow these stereotypes and is often thought as a weird child because of it. EthelMay is out casted a lot like Ester in Orphan, she too is bullied at school, doesn’t
follow the social norms and doesn’t get along with her adopted Mother. We feel this
is a good basis for a young girl to build social interaction problems and problems
with fitting in, so resolves to her own form of comfort, by being on her own and
letting her mind take control. We represent all of this in our title sequence through
the way she is dressed with plain baggy clothing and playing on her own and doing
everything quietly and independently. We see she has self conflict with herself as
she commits a murderous act but then calls the police on herself.
Is gender represented in a stereotypical way?
I.e. men dominant and women passive

Gender is represented in a stereotypical way but also not so. In one sense it is
because we present Ethel-May as a young innocent young girl who looks normal
but quiet and enjoys being outside, in the playground and playing with toys and
skipping ropes. However we see that there is something not stereotypical about
Ethel-may even in the title sequence we see how independent she is, never with
friends, dressed very plainly and always looking sad, playing in the playground on
her own. This is not normal behavior for a young preteen girl, this shows that
there is something not normal and off about the girl from the very
beginning, throwing the audience of course as the girl is unrelatable and
suspicious, even though she seems innocent and sweet the audience can already
see there is something odd.
How does this link into the target audience?

This character links to the target audience because most people are familiar
which plot twists, as advertised as a horror movie, it is clear that the young girl is
the main threat despite her appearance and innocent look. Her gender and age
contradicts the idea of being scary but our target audience will be 18+ so will
appreciate the plot twist and the juxtaposition which also adds to how scary the
film is as it contradicts all expectations and stereotypes. Also people of the age of
30-50 who have children of this age will find it even more scary as it is more
relatable to them as they have children, the more relatable it is the more
appealing the film is. As advertised as a horror movie thrill seekers will also find it
appealing to watch, attracting the right kind of target audience.
