Nathan stands out from the other characters in Misfits due to his cocky and sarcastic personality. He does not put much effort into customizing his community service jumpsuit, showing his somewhat blank personality. Nathan has a troubled relationship with his parents, with his parents splitting up and his father not providing much emotional support. As a result, Nathan lives independently in the community center, feeling unloved by anyone.
Nathan's Troubled Past and Rebellious Personality in Misfits
1. In Misfits it is easily seen that they all have a style and a type
of character. Nathan stands out, he is very cocky and thinks
he knows everything and over uses the sarcasm. He doesn’t
customize his jumpsuit much, he just has a plain dark top
under it. This could be to show he has a bit of a blank
personality. Also his hair is very wild and messy, this could
be to show he isn’t getting attention from his Mum. Through
the media youth is getting demonized for who they are.
Nathan steels a pick and mix, from this he has now got a
reputation as a “violent youth” as this is how youths are
getting represented by the media “to fear our children-because
they are going to kill us.” Whereas other characters in misfits
have done more of a crime like taking drugs, burning down a
house. Unlike, Nathan “just” stealing a pick and mix.
We never see Nathan having a close relationship or even a
relationship with his parents. His Mum and Dad have split up
and his Mum has found someone else. At one point in misfits
Nathan gets into trouble, to Nathan calling the police is a
smaller threat than getting his Dad to come over and help.
His Dad comes to sort the issue out but he doesn’t care
enough and ends up leaving him there to try and sort it out.
However Nathan doesn’t want help from him anyway. This
could be because Nathan has got this far in his life without a
Father figure, he is trying to prove a point.Later we learn this
has been an ongoing let down by this parents. In another
episode we find out he has a step brother who his Dad has
never told him about. Nathan asks why he never knew about
him all his Dad can say is he didn’t want to hurt his Mum. It
comes across that his Dad doesn’t know how to care for him
or doesn’t know how Nathan will react to him being nice to
him as he has never seen him like that. Nathans brother hits
his Dad around the head with a toaster it’s still got humor in a
serious situation going with Nathans personality. Nathan
2. doesn’t want to be known like his Dad but he has some
similarities to him. After all of these situations he is now
living in the community centre on his own as no one wants
him.
Nathan fits an adolescent teenager he is interested in sex,
drugs and being immature. However he doesn’t fit the role of
being a “hoodie” or “chav” he is unruly. This could be because
he has never felt loved by anyone, this links to his power. His
power is being immortal he sees this as a good thing but when
talking to the others they say it’s not a good thing as the
people he loves will die. He then works out that he doesn’t
have anyone that loves or cares for him. His child like
behavior comes out in the situation saying he can get with
loads of girls. This is about the only time we see him thinking
about his feelings and his feeling towards other people.
