RESEARCH PROPOSAL - PART 1: INTRODUCTION, REVIEW OF LITERATURE, PROBLEM STATEMENT,
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
Due at the end of week 7 (Sunday February 28, 2021 at midnight)
You need to conduct some research related to your own interests or to serve the interests of some organization
(employer/client/sponsor). Before you start writing a formal proposal, you (or your employer/client/sponsor) would like to
gather some information about the problem as well as understand its importance.
Choose your research topic thoughtfully and submit the topic of your research proposal for approval the latest by the end of
Week 3 (Sunday January 31, 2021 at midnight). You can find the submission box in Week 3.
This part of your research proposal should be roughly 7-9 pages (excluding cover page, references and annex) and written
in paragraphs, report format. All citations and references for this course are to be done in the APA style.
HERE ARE THE KEY PARTS OF THIS PART OF THE PROPOSAL (PART 1):
Title of your research
Make it intriguing – (BUT LESS THAN 120 CHARACTERS)
Introduction/Background
Provide a brief description of what the proposed research topic is about, why is it important and how you came to be
interested in it.
Literature Review
The purpose of this assignment is to develop skills in finding and analyzing valid literary resources for your research.
The review should be written in an integral / synthetic style, and NOT as an annotated bibliography.
Please note: Use in-text citations to reference all ideas, concepts, text, and data that are not your own. If you make a
statement, back it up with a reference!
• Research a minimum of 15 relevant business-related literature sources (focus on material available in digital
format only for this course). Carefully choose your 15 "keepers" that are clearly related to your study. (Note: you
might need to find 30 to “keep” only 15).
• Identify major common themes encountered in the selected literature sources. For each theme, create its own
subsection within the literature review.
• For each theme / subsection of the literature review, explain the opinions of the authors and show their
similarities, differences, methods of acquisition of data, methods of data analysis and other pertinent information.
State how the reviewed research results relate to your proposed study.
• Identify the gaps in the literature and explain what needs to be done to move forward in your research.
Statement of the Problem
Detail the problem that you are considering. Explain:
• How are you defining and delimiting the specific area of the research?
• What is the gap that will be addressed by this research?
• What it is that you hope to learn by conducting this research?
• Discuss the anticipated outcomes and benefits to the researcher, the organization, or society.

Wireless communication involves the transmission of information over a distance without the help of wires, cables or any other forms of electrical conductors.
Wireless communication is a broad term that incorporates all procedures and forms of connecting and communicating between two or more devices using a wireless signal through wireless communication technologies and devices.
Features of Wireless Communication
The evolution of wireless technology has brought many advancements with its effective features.
The transmitted distance can be anywhere between a few meters (for example, a television's remote control) and thousands of kilometers (for example, radio communication).
Wireless communication can be used for cellular telephony, wireless access to the internet, wireless home networking, and so on.
2. What is the task?
• Write a critical review of one podcast chosen from the course outline
(link to Voxdev podcasts on D2L)
• What is a critical review? Think of a review for a book, movie, video
game, etc. A good review contains (1) some
background/context/motivation, (2) a summary, and (3) discussion of
problems/limitations (and possibly solutions), typically in that order. It
is self-contained (i.e. understandable to someone who didn’t read the
article)
• 1500-2000 words
• Due March 30th (3 weeks)
3. Introduction
• Job is to provide background/context/motivation
• Why is the topic important? Why is the particular question explored
in the research important? (what is different/distinct vs. what we
already know, learned from other studies?)
• Relate to class material (readings, lectures, presentations), quote a
few statistics, tell a little story
At the end of introduction (1-2 paragraphs), should have a clear
• thesis statement (what the essay will argue): should include an
assessment, e.g. the research is convincing at showing X, but could be
improved by considering Y and Z.
4. Summary
• Describe the setting – where and who is being studied
• What is the experiment or “treatment” being considered? Be as
precise as possible.
• What are the outcomes being analyzed (be precise – magnitudes are
helpful)?
• What are the main results?
• For some podcasts, it may help to look at the research paper that the
podcast is based on to fill in some of the gaps/details.
5. Critique
• Don’t just say that what you liked or not (found convincing or not) but tell
us why
• Aim for 2-3 main points
• Constructive is always better
• Is the question/experiment misguided or missing some fundamental point?
Is there a different and better way to answer the same question? Is there
some modification/variation of the experiment that would be more
interesting/illuminating? Are there alternative ways to interpret the same
results? Are there outcomes that the authors did not consider that are
important and worth considering?
• It is ok to ask whether similar results would hold or not in other settings
(countries, different populations) but better if you can provide a reasons
why.
6. Additional considerations
• Relating the topic or methods to material covered in
readings/lecture/presentations is strongly encouraged!
• Use of 1-2 additional sources is encouraged (besides textbook/class
readings/lectures)
• Any citation style is fine
• Spell-check and proofread – style matters!
• Essays submitted by next week will be returned by March 23rd
