The first thing a reader notices when reading Garden Party by Katherine Mansfield
is the title. A garden party is a social event, which usually implies friends are
invited, there is eating, and exchanging of social niceties, gossip, and other
conversation; this can be called communion. In How to Read Literature Like a
Professor Mr. Foster states whenever people eat and/or drink together it s
communion and not all communions are holy . An act of communion brings
people together and provides a place for fellowship. A garden party is also a
symbol of wealth, which is also, supported the main character, Laura. She can be
quoted in the following situations; Laura s upbringing made her wonder for a
moment whether it was quite respectful of a workman to talk to her of bangs slap in
the eye and It s all the fault...of these absurd class distinctions . Both of these
statements give proof that in the period this story was set, the wealthy were separated
from the poverty stricken through social class. As a result of the class distinctions, she

garden party when a man died and left his family in such poor circumstances. She
is seemingly very distraught when she hears the news, frantically wondering how

When Laura confronts Jose with her questions, Jose thinks Laura is being too
dramatic and says that no one expects them to cancel the party. Her mother

pollution caused by the increased number of visitors to the Milwaukee County Zoo

as Non Family Free days and Thursday afternoons where a decrease in zoo
