truly deserves the credit for his literature? Debated by historians for centuries, Shakespeare's
authorship has been challenged using a multitude of evidence.
William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford–upon–Avon, England. Stratford was small, only
being home to 1,500 inhabitants. Stratford was a market town where people from neighboring
cities traveled to sell their crops, animals, and goods. Shakespeare's birthday is unknown, but had to
have taken place before his christening on April 26. As a child, he grew up in a well–off
middle–class family. However, this all changed when the business of William's father, John

twins, Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet died at the age of 11, and it is said that Shakespeare
disappeared from all records for seven years following this incident. He finally turned up in
London in approximately 1592. It is unsure of why this took place, and various theories have been
broadcasted. There is one story that states he may have been working as an assistant schoolmaster
in Lancashire for a time, and another that discusses an event where he had to flee Stratford after a

member in the Lord Chamberlain's company, and published his very first play, Litus Andronicus.
Along with Will Kempe, a fine comedian of the time, and Richard Burbage, a leading actor, the
Lord Chamberlain's Men became a most desired, and popular group all across the city. In the
mid–1590's the plague forced theatres in London to close, to halt the spread of disease, and this was
when William Shakespeare and the rest of his troupe, began plans for the Globe Theatre.

Who is the real Shakespeare? There are those who insist that William Shakespeare is the author of
the many works attributed to him and reports state that there are those who believe some type of
conspiracy exists to protect the real name of the author of those works. Claims state that there is no
evidence to document William Shakespeare of Stratford as the author and that he did not have the
aristocratic background, education, or knowledge to have written such content as is found in the
works of Shakespeare. It is reported that the evidence that does exist to document his life are
inclusive of such as "mundane personal details such as vital records of his baptism, marriage and
death, tax records, lawsuits to recover debts and real estate transactions." (Nicoll, 2010)
There are no documents that show he was the recipient of an education and there are further no
letters, literary manuscripts, or other documents to support him having written those works.
Prominent individuals who have been swayed by those who do not believe Shakespeare as the
author of the poetry and plays attributed to him include such as Helen Keller, Mark Twain, Sigmund
Freud, Henry James, Orson Welles, and Charlie Chapman. The endorsements of these individuals are
stated to be a primary "element in many anti–Stratfordian arguments." (Nicoll, 2010, p.3)

is known about Anne and her children around this date, except for the death of her son,
Hamnet, at the age of eleven on August 11, 1596. William Shakespeare was left without an aire, but
by this time he had already left for England to start his career.
As mentioned before, Shakespeare had an early period of his life which led from his withdrawal
from grammar school, to his marriage to Anne Hathaway, which is commonly referred to as his "lost
years." Now comes the second section of his life where not much is heard of him and is also
likewise known as his "lost years." This period lasted seven years, from the time he left his family
in Stratford to the time he had become an established actor by the end of 1592. It is thought that
during this time "he practiced his skills and may have even been recruited by the Leicester's or
