1. Essay about Marketing Definition
Introduction In this paper I will define marketing in my own words and also research what the
definition is using two different sources. While supporting my answers with three examples from
the business world, I will show the importance of marketing. Marketing applies to many different
areas of an organization and after close review I will make it clear on how it relates.
Personal Definition Marketing is how a company or organization promotes the service or product
the company uses to create revenue. After closely reviewing the needs of the public in an area or
the market and the product or service is revised to accommodate these needs, a marketing plan
would be created and executed.
Printed Definition "Marketing is an...show more content...
We still have products, services, and ideas to sell at some price. We deliver to our customers via
some means of distribution. We promote and we advertise. Those are the basics. Those basics still
exist and always will." (Kyle, 2007)
Importance of Marketing Marketing is the sometimes the soul reason a product is chosen.
Whether it is something one needs or it is an everyday service provided, how this is marketed can
be the reason one business is so successful and another is not. Communicating to a customer what
products or services are offered is a very vital step to getting the attention of future consumers, and
also keeping the interest in current consumers. If a company takes the time to repackage, come
up with a new jingle, or improve an already good product, the consumer will consider that when
they make the purchase. As a consumer, I believe if a company takes the time to improve the
product it shows interest in their own product and makes me feel better about the purchase.
Example 1: The new and improved shower cleaners. The company is currently marketing a
product that a consumer can purchase and install in their own shower that will spray a mist to
clean your shower. This is a fantastic marketing plan as with all the busy schedules of the family
unit today, there is really no time to stop and clean the house as often as one would like. If this
product truly does what it says and will save the

Every company depends on an efficient marketing program to fulfill customers' needs. Marketing is
a process of finding out what the customer wants and meeting those requirements. Within the
company, the marketing group has to consider customer values and customer satisfaction before
considering offering a product. Marketing is part of our everyday world, and can be perceived
everywhere and every time. At any time, everyone has been exposed to different kinds of marketing
or advertising depending upon personal necessities such as T.V commercials, radio, internet, etc.
Another definition of marketing is the "selling of products or services: the business activity of

This entire process is known as marketing management " the art and science of choosing target
markets and getting, keeping, and growing customers through creating, delivering, and
communicating superior customer value" (Kotler & Keller, p.5).
To be successful in business, "a consumer does not buy a whole of physical components of the
product but it is usefulness, function, satisfaction of consumer's needs, solving the problem, etc"
(Dubrouski, , p.1). "That is why the product is a whole of tangible and intangible components which
means satisfaction of consumer's needs and desires, solving the problem"(Dubrouski, p.1).
Companies and managers must learn to utilize marketing research, as well as, strategy skills to fulfill
customers' satisfaction. Management has to focus on exclusive marketing challenges presented by
the new era of the 21st century. Management has to be able to utilize inventive, dominant, and cost
effective marketing techniques that will support the future success of the organization. Companies
must meet,"the increasing importance of services as part of a product (offer, offering package)
which cannot be neglected" (Dubrouski, p.1). Exploring the purpose of market research, as well as,
evaluating the importance of such research, facilitates managers in realizing the importance of
marketing to an organization's success and to be globally competitive.

"Marketing is a social and managerial process by which individuals and groups obtain what they
need and want through creating and exchanging products and value with others." (Kotler et al,
2003:13). Marketing is a key aspect within a business and has several different functions. Some of
these functions include, research, analysis, promotion, pricing and distribution. These functions lead
into the evolution of the five alternative concepts under which organisations conduct marketing
activities. The concepts include the production concept, the product concept, the selling concept, the
marketing concept and the societal marketing concept.
The production concept focuses upon the improvement of production and distribution efficiency,

The last concept is; the marketing concept. This is a relatively new business philosophy with an
outside in perspective, which begins with the target market and works back. It is centred on
achieving organisational goals and depends on determining the needs and wants of target markets. In
order to achieve these goals the whole organisation has to take responsibility for building
relationships with the customers and maintaining these. Within the organisation customer focus has
to work from top down and bottom up. This means it has to be totally accepted by the whole work
force and all staff committed to building lasting relationship with customers. This concept is the
most widely used concept of all five because it has proved to be successful. This is mainly due to the
reality that it focuses on the customer needs and wants, rather than on the internal organisations
needs and wants.
In order for the organisation to adopt the marketing concept and give the customers what they want
or need, they need to take a look at their target markets. Most organisations do this by using a
process known as segmentation. "Market segmentation is dividing a market into distinct groups with
distinct needs, characteristics, or behaviour who might require separate products or marketing
mixes" (Kotler et al 2004:239). This means, building the RIGHT relationships with the RIGHT
people. For example, there is no
