especially murder. The death penalty is prescribed by Congress or state legislatures to
those who commit capital crimes. One responsibility that the justice system must
uphold is to administer a punishment that is equivalent to the crime. If the death
penalty, that is imposed on Christopher Simmons, is not approved and administered,
a safety net will be created for juvenile offenders that plan to commit crimes. The
death penalty is completely constitutional due to the following reasons: the new
methods of the execution allows the death penalty to not violate the 8th amendment
of the Constitution, age does not define the maturity of an individual, therefore the
age limit must be overlooked, and the death penalty will become a deterrent for

however, some cultural and religious beliefs cause opposition when the proposed
treatment conflicts with their personal views. Although creating a balance between
autonomy and paternalism seems to be the ideal approach to insuring the most
successful outcomes, physicians can not force patients to choose their prescribed

clear. The House on Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros, is a simplistic yet
emotionally moving piece of writing. The narrator is a young Latina girl who has
found herself living in a house on Mango Street. Not following a chronological order,
the short vignettes give a sense of incomplete endings and a never ending story.
Although the book does follow Esperanzas viewpoint, the book s title fully embodies
the experiences from Esperanza Cordero and the community around her. In the
beginning of the novel, the house on Mango Streetwas immediately shown to have a
special place in Esperanza s course of life. Although the house wasn t in agreement

Analyzing Seamus Heaney s Blackberry-Picking
The poem Blackberry Picking is about a young man s coming of age, and how the
lesson he learns, about picking blackberries, relates to the human realization that
reality is not always how we want it to be. Seamus Heaney illustrates this lesson by
showing the narrator s unabiding desire for the blackberries when he speaks of the
lust for picking and how he was willing to go out in the fields to pick the
blackberries despite having to go where briars scratched and wet grass bleached our
boots in obvious discomfort (7 8,10). Furthermore, after the blackberries had turned
bad the narrator clearly tells us, each year I hoped they d keep, knew they would not
(24). This final bit at the end shows how the narrator matures and has come to accept
The first thing that is noticeable about the way Seamus wrote this poem is his use
of rhyme or lack thereof. He uses slant rhymes throughout most of the poem an
example being sun and ripen on lines one and two. This could be interpreted to
portray how the speaker feels. The speaker wants the blackberries to stay sweet
despite his experience picking blackberries that would always end up rotting. At the
same time, the slant rhymes are so close to rhyming, but never fully do creating a
bittersweet feeling that symbolizes how the speaker loves the blackberries, but how
he hates how they rot. In the text this is reinforced when he says, I always felt like
crying. It wasn t fair (22). Another example of Seamus creating this bittersweet tone
in the poem is how he uses iambic pentameter throughout most of the poem, but
similar to how the slant rhymes don t quite work, on every couple of lines he breaks
the meter and adds an extra syllable. This feeling is continued throughout the poem

Metaphysical Conceit in the Poetry of John Donne
Many of John Donne s poems contain metaphysical conceits and intellectual
reasoning to build a deeper understanding of the speaker s emotional state. A
metaphysical conceit can be defined as an extended, unconventional metaphor
between objects that appear to be unrelated. Donne is exceptionally good at creating
unusual unions between different elements in order to illustrate his point and form a
persuasive argument in his poems.
By using metaphysical conceits in A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning, Donne
attempts to convince his love (presumably his wife) that parting is a positive

The speaker compares a frightful earthquake to the trepidation of the spheres, which
is more powerful than an earthquake, but less harmful. The lovers movement away
from one another is like the motion of the spheres and therefore it should not be
feared. Donne uses the astronomical term sublunary to describe normal love and
contrast this type of mundane love to their own. Theirs is a divine love which is
elevated beyond simple physical bonds. When they part, their souls remain as one
without a breach, but an expansion,/ Like gold to airy thinness beat (lines 23 24).
These lines support the idea that their bond does not dissolve, but only changes form.
Near the end of the poem, Donne makes an unlikely comparison between the
couple and a draftsman s compass. This is one of his most famous metaphysical
conceits because the two elements which are being compared appear completely
different, and yet, amazingly, Donne is able to connect them. He explains that his
wife is his fixed foot that leans towards him as he roams and straightens again as he
returns, but remains his center. Her firmness is what makes his circle complete,
[a]nd makes [him] end where [he] begun (line 36). The imagery of the circle and the
spheres in this poem solidify the eternity of their love and the knowledge that the
speaker will always return to the place where he began. Donne s comparisons create
an image of celebration rather than mourning.

Describing Dunkirk On the 20th May 1940the allied troops were trapped by the
Germans on the Northern coast of France. The allies consisted of the British
Expeditionary Force (B.E.F), the Belgian Army and the ten best divisions of the
French Army. It was on this day that Churchill gave the command for the evacuation
to take place, to Britain by ship, following advice from Lord Gort (leader of the
B.E.F). Rommel was advancing from the north and Degaudier from the south
trapping the troops. The evacuation was organised by Admiral Ramsey and
codenamed Operation Dynamo with the main objective to rescue as much of the
B.E.F as possible. This evacuation began on May 27th from the beaches of Dunkirk.
An important factor in arguing Dunkirk as a defeat is that 68,111 men from the
B.E.F were killed, wounded or taken prisoner during the evacuation. The cost of
replacing the B.E.F s equipment would be astronomical for the government and
for their part in the evacuation the Navy suffered 243 ships sunken (including 6
important British destroyers with 19 left damaged) and the RAF lost 474 aircraft.
Source 3 supports the view of Dunkirk as a British military defeat. It is a
photographic source showing Dunkirk after the evacuation displaying a deserted
beach littered with equipment, corpses and debris. Off the shore are broken half
sunken ships with those that have become beached, one possibly a military boat
and also many smaller vessels. The photograph of the dead soldiers shows military
defeat as the objective was to rescue the B.E.F and would be very demoralising for
the British public. The large boat could belong to the navy and would be very
valuable, loss of this would be very expensive, along with the rest of the abandoned
equipment. The source seems reliable as it is first hand primary evidence. It is
useful for showing defeat as it displays what it looked like at Dunkirk after the
evacuation. Its also backs up my own knowledge as the B.E.F lost 68,111 men and
