Game Theory Reflection
My independent study on Game Theory this past semester has been an extremely rewarding
experience. It has pushed me to learn more about myself, to approach the world with new
perspectives, to see similarities across discipline, and to cross apply knowledge to improve my
models. I was drawn into Game Theory because of its wide range of applications across
academic disciplines like economics, biology, and history as well as in real life situations like
bargaining and getting loans. In my independent proposal and my first blog post, I have
established exploring the real world applications of Game Theoryas one of my major goals this
semester. Since the start of September, I ve been watching Game Theory courses on Yale Open
Courseware and doing weekly problem sets accompanying the lectures. The diverse examples
Professor Polak used to illustrate complex concepts confirmed my previous beliefs that Game
Theory is not an isolated and purely theoretical subject, but is developed to answer human
curiosities and our needs. These lectures not only taught me to draw payoff matrices and decision
tree to figure out best responses to hypothetical situation but also to see the similarities in life
situations through the perspectives of simplistic mathematic models. For example, the generalized
prisoner s dilemma model that involves two players and two strategies can be used to explain the
necessity of roommate contract, procrastination in group projects, or grades inflation in the

The Segregation Of The South
Segregation in the South
Introduction
According to Merriam Webster the word segregation was first known to be used in 1555. It is
defined as the separation or isolation of a race, class, or ethnic group by enforcing or voluntary
residence in a restricted area, by barriers to social intercourse, by separate educational facilities, or
by other discriminatory means.
The United States underwent vast transformations, especially in the South. New political, social,
and economic systems emerged that transformed the South from a rural, slave based society, to an
increasingly urban, industrialized, free labor society. The changes to the social, political, and
economic landscape of the South prompted an unprecedented era of racial violence throughout the
region (Jett, p.40). The Southern states deemed slavery was crucial to safeguard white superiority.
Most Southern whites who had aspirations of becoming a very prominent slave owner, were
terrified of a society with considerable numbers of African Americans who were not slaves.
Segregation moved by way of public accommodations, all the way through the South. DeFina
Hannon (2011) and others showed daily interactions of whites and blacks in the South, during
reconstruction of the south identified racial prejudices were increasing steadily, after the Civil War
and especially during the 1880 s. Town after town across the south flatly banned African Americans
within their city limits after dark. Legal, political, social and

believed that each manager was accountable for only a small portion of the overall profits and
each one could function as miniature company. Therefore, they had deposit book for each

manager accumulated in his resource bankbook. Also, whoever reaches his goal earlier will
receive more income. This is an incentive to do a better job. Also, they gave bonuses to managers
who performed well. However, Haier used the punishment to motivate their employees. For
example, for everyday, the employee who had the lowest performance would stand on the
yellow footprints to reflect . This employees should tell why he was doing bad and how should
him improve in the future. This helped the employee to lower the probability of repeating being
the lowest performance worker again in workplace and showed to other employees do not make

In this paper, a study on the Dividends Discount Model (DDM) will be explored and explained.
The four main topics that this essay will be based around include what two common share
valuation techniques are used, the dividend discount model and the use of a multiples approach, a
discussion on the relative advantages and disadvantages of dividend discount model and a look
into which model would produce the most accurate results and Why? With the relevant content,
research, and analysis of these specific topics, an understanding of these methods and procedures

The past plays a big part in the future when it comes to dividends, if there has been a strong growth
in dividends in the past then future dividend growth is predicted signaling a strong bottom line and
profits for the company.
Advantages of the DDM are that it is frequently used when calculating share prices, due to it being
easily taught and its simplicity making it easy to understand. DDM also has the ability to give
value to a company s stock, disregarding the current market making it easy to compare across
different companies and industries big or small. Another advantage is the models rely firmly on
theory and also its ability to stay consistent over the lifetime of the company.
Disadvantages of the DDM include the model itself not appreciating certain factors such as
customer and brand loyalty and the ownership of intangible assets. Factors that are vital towards
the success value of a company. Another disadvantage is the DDM being highly dependent on the
assumption of the company s growth in dividends believing that it s rate is stable and known.
DDM states the fact that stock prices are fragile to the chosen growth rate of dividends,
eliminating the ability for the rate to surpass the cost of equity, which in some cases isn t always

Surface Of Mercury Research Paper
The surface of Mercury is very rocky, and has many pits and craters on it due to the large number
of meteors that have collided with the surface over the years. According to all all observations
that muggle spacecraft has made, the surface of Mercury is dead, with no signs of life or liquid
water. This is largely due to its lack of atmosphere and extreme temperatures. Also due to the lack
of atmosphere, Mercury has no weather or wind, and the surface has few distinguishing features
such as riverbeds or dust storms. Much of the surface is similar to the surface of Earths moon.
Beneath the surface of mercury is a solid core, which is very rich in iron deposits. The core is
large compared to the total size of the planet, the largest ratio of any planet or dwarf planet in our
solar system.
Venus has a very dramatic climate, it s atmosphere contains many greenhouse gasses and is the
hottest planet in our solar system, despite the fact that it is further from the sun than Mercury. The

The different tectonic plates rest on the mantle, a very hot layer of earth that is directly beneath the
crust. There are seven major tectonic plates, their names are The Pacific Plate, The North American
Plate, The Eurasian Plate, The African Plate, The Antarctic Plate, The Australian Plate, and The
South American Plate. In addition to these major plates there are also many smaller tectonic plates
that make up parts of the Earth s crust. When the boundaries between plates shift, this causes
earthquakes. There are three types of movements that cause earthquakes. Divergent is when the
plates move away from each other, Subduction is when one plate moves underneath another, and
Transform is when the plates grind against each other. The lithosphere is another name for earth s

Crime Is A Serious Problem
Policing and fighting crime are two terms often associated together. Crime is a serious problem
in cities and a lot of people are affected by it. Victims, criminals and their families are touched by
the outcomes of crime. Crime has increased over the years and is continuing to do so. The city of
Memphis has experienced a great increase of crime. Memphis Policehave developed initiatives to
reduce crime, using federally funded programs. Unfortunately, crime problems such as theft,
assaults and homicide have become irrepressible over the last three years. The rate of homicide
in Memphis is more typical of cities of its size. Assaults were accounted for 65 percent of deaths
in the area. (Kellermann, Rivara Lee,1996,p.1438 1440). The Uniformed Crime Report (UCR) is
very successful for keeping track with the rates of these crimes.
The environment, the personality of the perpetrator and genetics has all been factors to blame for
criminal behavior. Although, these factors have potential to play a role in the reasoning behind
criminal acts, they will have to be supported. Criminological theories can hold the context to
support the evidence of these factors. Understanding crime and developing strategies are the keys
in taking the step to initiate a strategic plan. When addressing theft, assaults and homicide, the
initiatives will have to be considered and provisions will be made for a successful reduction in
crime. Addressing the problems of theft, assaults and homicide a

International Human Resource Management Practices
International human resource management (IHRM) is the study and application of all human
resource management activities as they impact the process of managing human resources in
enterprises in the global environment (Briscoe, Schuler Tarique, 2012). This part is very important
in order to make sure that all problems at global level can be solved. Our economies in the last 50
years have become more integrated than before. There are a lot of factors that contributed to the
achievement such as multinational enterprise (MNE), small and medium sized enterprises (MSEs),
and non governmental organizations (NGOs).

2 Differences between countries in terms of their cultures and institutions
The first issue that we are going to discuss is about the differences between countries in terms of
their cultures and institutions. Culture is the characteristic way of behaving and believing that a
group of people have developed over time and share in common (Briscoe, Schuler Tarique, 2012).
Whilst globalization is undoubtedly an important aspect of economic activity, it is less significant
in its scale and consequences than some enthusiasts claim (Scholte, 2005). Further, the ways in
which the international management coordination of economic activities is developing reflect
established patterns of economic globalization and competition at national level, such that these
structure any emergent properties of a new transnational business system (Dicken, 2007). So, in this
section we are going to explain evidently the scope of country differences more predominantly. We
will divide it into two perspectives, which are cultural perspectives and institutional perspectives
which developed by Geert Hofstede and Fons Trompenaars.
2.1 Cultural Perspectives by Geert Hofstede
Hofstede defines culture as the collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the
members of one group or category of people from another (Rees Edwards, 2011). There are five
dimensions proposes by Hofstede which are power distance, uncertainty avoidance,

Audrey Hepburn s Lasting Impact On World War II
Audrey Hepburn, born in 1929, made a lasting impact on World War II. During the war Hepburn
s mother moved her family to the Netherlands where she believed that their family would be kept
safe since it was a neutral country. Despite what Hepburn s mother thought, the Nazis invaded.
The Nazis cut off food supplies starving their family and millions of others; due to this
malnourishment, causing her to have a slender figure that later was envied by many. Due to
children s innocence they would be given the task of carrying money and papers to different
groups of the resistance. Hepburn was a strong advocate for the resistance, since her uncle was
killed by the Nazis, one of her brothers was in a labor camp, and the other brother was in hiding.

poetry. Keeping these two aspects in mind, write a paragraph in which you explain what the
following quotations from the poem refer to:
In order to properly understand certain poems, one needs to know the context in which certain
things are said and we need to know about the history about certain things that occur in the poem. In
this particular poem In the shadow of Signal Hill , it is important to know that the poem is about
the apartheid era in South Africa, therefore certain lines places this into context. In line 7: listen to

Repetition is used in order to place an emphasis on what is being repeated. These lines symbolize
and create a very cold and very unpleasant atmosphere in the poem. The poet could have chosen to
repeat these lines because it would emphasize the fact that the apartheid era was a very cold and
harsh time for those who were being oppressed. This is very effective on the meaning of the poem
as it constantly reminds the reader to sympathize with those who were affected and it allows the

Essay on The Hours by Michael Cunningham
In his novel The Hours, Michael Cunningham creates a dazzling fabric of queer references
managing to intertwine the lives of three different women into one smooth narrative. In this essay,
I will discuss what makes The Hours queer literature, how the novel has contributed to the queer
genre, the cultural significance of the novel, and I will discuss several points made in Jeanette
McVicker s critical article Gaps and Absences in The Hours. My aim, however, is not to say that
Michael Cunningham s The Hours is strictly a queer novel, but to highlight what makes the novel
queer and to discuss Cunningham s idea of sexual orientationas a fluid entity. To begin my analysis
on the queer narrative in The Hours, we must fist discover what... Show more content on

It is considerably easier to identify the queerness of the novel s characters and author than its
political purpose. Michael Cunningham, the novel s author, is a gay male and openly
acknowledges that his sexual orientation influences his work as can be seen by the fact that many
of his novels involve gay characters and gay experiences. In particular, The Hours features three
women who each have same sex experiences Virginia Woolf
, Laura Brown, and Clarissa Vaughn.
Virginia Woolf is a married woman who had public affairs with women and who shares a chaste
kiss with her sister during her narrative. Woolf is also the author of Mrs. Dalloway, a novel that
centers on Clarissa Dalloway, a woman who feels the same way as men feel (Woolf 36) about
women, yet marries a man as society dictates.
Laura Brown is also a married woman, like both Woolf and Dalloway, but rather than having
affairs with women, she, like Clarissa Dalloway, feels bound by her role in society and is greatly
unhappy with her situation. For a brief moment, she breaks away from her heteronormative life
and seems to truly desire to break free from the gender roles forced upon her while sharing a kiss
with her neighbor s wife, Kitty.
The question has been silently asked and silently answered, it seems. They are both afflicted and
blessed, full of shared secrets, striving every moment. They are both impersonating

History of France
Process of Findings
Before Marie Antoinette married Dauphin Louis XVI in 1770, the situation in France was already
beginning to become disordered. The peasants, which made up about 90% of the population at the
time, were treated unfairly and began to feel frustrated and upset with the Monarchy. At the time,
Marie Antoinette was distrusted because of her foreign birth and many of the peasants saw her as
the source of their problems and disliked her. She was often seen in the past as a bad Queen due
to her careless spending and seemingly frivolous lifestyle, now with more evidence and sources,
opinions have shifted. Many see Marie Antoinette as a victim of her own circumstances, as it can
be seen by the state of affairs in France before her arrival, her upbringing and public opinion before
her death during the French Revolution. This essay will illustrate that Marie Antoinette was indeed a
victim of her circumstances.
The time before the Revolution was hard for peasants as they were taxed heavily, The peasant,
the farmer, the townsman, from their scanty purses were drawn the large sums required. The
King and all the nobles used their power badly . Peasants paid their taxes in coin, in kind, and in
labour , therefore they paid lots of money to cover the value of the holding , then had to send
food such as corn , butter , etc. to the big house , and then he had to act as a workman for the

Love s Labor s Lost
Love s Labor s Lost (1598) by William Shakespeare shows a humorous battle of the sexes among
members of the aristocracy. While this battle may seem like a harmless game of wits on the
surface, there is a serious lack of authentic communication that underlies this comedic play, which
spells trouble for male and female relations in general. Through insincere words, vows, and
writing, both sexes men especially show a failure to loveand communicate genuinely.
This battle of the sexes, at least superficially, does not seem to have much at stake. The men do
have vows to keep, but they are easily worked around once the men realize that they are all in love.

On one hand, Berowne s apparent sorrow shows his willingness to take the oath seriously. However,
on the other hand, if Berowne truly loved Rosaline, it is perplexing that he should love the worst
of all, describing her eyes as two pitch balls stuck in her face. This is not a flattering description at
all, and if Berowne feels this way about Rosaline, it is not clear as to why he has trouble keeping
his vow; it is almost as if Berowne is more interested in the performance of love than the beloved
herself. It also likely has to do with the fact that Berowne does not want to follow the oath, and is
looking for a way out and it would seem that this is true for the other men as well. When the men
look to Berowne for reassurance after breaking their oaths, Berowne says of swearing off
women, We have made a vow to study, lords, / And in that vow we have forsworn our books
(Shakespeare 4.3.292 293). Berowne makes the argument that they are supposed to be studying,
and that studying is impossible without being able to look at a woman s beautiful face. This
argument is tenuous at best, but it does the job, because the men would take any excuse to allow
them to forsake their oaths. It is quite interesting that the men are willing to break one vow to swear

The Diamond Necklace Affair Essay
The Diamond Necklace Affair
Marie Antoinette, Queen of France from 1770 to 1797 was despised by the people of France.
Their hatred of her and the monarchy in general led to the French Revolution. Many issues led to
the unpopularity of Queen Maria Antoinette, her vanity, her disregard for the people, but perhaps
the most significant was the Affair of the Diamond Necklace. In 1785, the court jewelers, Bohmer
and Basange, constructed a necklace with five hundred and forty diamonds of varying sizes in an
ugly arrangement that resembled the collars worn by circus animals. They hoped that King Louis
XV would purchase it for his favorite, Madame du Barry. Unfortunately, the king died before the

It was, after all, the Queen that tried to prevent him from being appointed Grand Almoner of
France. Campan replied that the gentleman must be mistaken. Bohmer answered that Campan was
the one being deceived. His eminence, he said, sees [the Queen] in private and he has brought me
thirty thousand francs from the Queen as a down payment. Madame Campan immediately notified
the Queen of his visit. When Marie Antoinette called the jeweler back for questioning the diabolical
plot was discovered (Komroff 86).
The plot began in 1777 when, against Marie Antoinette s wishes, Rohan was named Grand
Almoner. Trying desperately to soften the Queen s anger, realizing that if she wouldn t
acknowledge him, his power in court would diminish greatly, he wrote many letters to her but to no
avail. She still refused to honor him with the slightest sign of recognition (86).
His desire for recognition led to his involvement with an adventuress and swindler by the name of
Countess de la Motte Valois (Affair). Countess Jeanne la Motte Valois came from a very strange
background. She was a direct descendant of King Henry II of France but generations of bad
marriages had reduced the family to poverty. She married an officer of the gendarmes and the
couple assumed the titles of Count and Countess (Komroff 87).

When we think of the word big trucks you think of monster trucks first but it actually can also
mean the big tall lift of a truck and that is how monster trucks came to be. Lifting a vehicle over
the legal height is not allowed on the streets because of how big the vehicle is when modified
and can run the risk of running people off the road or over their car. When lifting a vehicle
started out it was for the everyday man or woman who was interested in mudding there vehicle to

The lifts were starting to go into the favor of the law again and when it did the changes were
starting to make people upset and tired of all the law changes. In Illinois you can t lift the body

between 4,501 and 7,500 pounds determine the maximum height of 27 inches at the front and 29
inches at the rear. Finally, if your truckis between 7,501 and 9,000 pounds, the allowable
alteration is a maximum height of 28 inches in front and 30 inches in back. The laws of lifting
were made to help keep the safety of the road and not to make everybody run off the road
because of a big lifted truck heading down the road. When the lift wasn t enough the tires

Internal Audit Of An Organization
The internal audits in an organization provide numbers of services that are significantly important
to company management and help organization to succeed. These services include testing internal
control, assessing operational risk, detecting the misstatement, and monitoring compliance with
government regulation and policy. Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) gives the latest definition of
internal auditis that: Internal auditis an independent assurance and consulting activity management,

The proposed WLEM is evaluated using the two weighting schemes which assigns classwise
weights to the instances. The performance of WELM is dependent on the choice of these weights.
The weighing schemes proposed only considers class skewness for assigning weights to the
instances. It ignores other data complexity measures as class overlapping, shape of the class, length
of decision boundary, class distribution etc. for computing the weights associated with the
instances. Assigning weights to the instances is a difficult task as we don t know that the factors
responsible for data complexity is different for different datasets.
Boosted WELM (WBELM)cite{BWELM} is a variant of adaboostcite{Schapire1999} ensemble
with WELMcite{WELM} as the component classifier. It differs from adaboost as equal weight is
assigned to all the classes irrespective of the number of instances in that class. After each iteration
the weights of the instances belonging to each class are rescaled such that total weight assigned to
each class is same.it has been reported in this papercite{BWELM} , that Boosting weighted ELM
and AdaBoost weighted ELM take about 10 and 50 times more training and testing time than
weighted ELM. It enhances the performance of WELM at the cost of increases redundancy and
computational overhead.

Natural Birth Versus Medicalized Birth
Natural Birth Versus Medicalized Birth
Introduction:
There has been a long debate over which birthing method women should use today: natural versus
medicalized. The World Health Organization defines natural birth as a vaginal birth without the use
of any.. and medicalized birth as being .. However, medicalized births are becoming increasingly
popular in the United States. The use of technology and medical interventions in the birthing
process has increased despite the unchanged basic physiology of childbirth. One of the most
common medical interventions in the birthing process is having a cesarean delivery. Despite the
known risks of having a cesarean section performed, the rates of this procedure have increased
much higher than the acceptable rate of 10 15% as recommended by the World Health
Organization. This is due to the reason that cesarean sections are now being performed as a matter
of convenience of the physician or at the request of the patient more often than being performed as
a life saving intervention. Thus making surgical and medicalized interventions a part of a common
routine in the childbirth experience.
Background:
Natural birth movements started in the mid 1940 s when birthing techniques, such as Lamaze s six
healthy birth practices, were introduced in the support of natural births and to lower the incidences
of medical intervention in childbirth. This movement has grown, and continues to be an alternative
dominant model of childbirth.

Was Captain Prestons Justified
On March 5, 1770 in Boston, the large mob of Bostonians tormented Captain Thomas Preston s
soldiers, who were watching the Customs House Building. One of the soldiers fired at the
Bostonians, which resulted in the rest of the soldiers firing at the Bostonians. Someone from the
crowd screamed for the soldiers to fire. This caused five of the Bostonians, including Crispus
Attucks, who were shot by Preston s men. Captain Preston s men were put on trial, and were
charged with the murder of the five Bostonians. Eventually, Preston was found innocent. The
verdict of innocent in the trial of Preston is justified because Preston tried to persuade his men to
not engage in a fight with the Bostonians. His lack of motive to murder the Bostonians and peaceful

Palmes shows that he is unsure who encouraged the shooting when he recalls I dont know who
gave the word fire...Captain might have given the word and I not distinguish it. There is not
any concrete evidence that proves that Preston is guilty because it is unclear if Preston truly did
order his men to fire. However, Preston s avoiding for violence and wanting for a peaceful
approach is confirmed by some witnesses like Theodore Bliss. Bliss declares that ...I did not
hear any Order given by Capt. to fire. I stood so near him I...might have heard him if he had
given an order to fire . Theodore Bliss confirms Preston s deposition by claiming that Preston did
not order his men to fire. Not only does Theodore Bliss state this, but Edward Hill, Daniel
Cornwall, Newton Prince, and James Goodwall state similarly that they also saw that they did not
see or did not believe that Preston ordered the men to fire. This shows that Preston describes what
he said and did at the Boston Massacre truthfully because witnesses like Bliss have accounts of the
Boston Massacre that are similar to that of Preston s. This evidence helps support that Preston had
taken a peaceful approach and is

other non profits can model. General Background
Children s Miracle Network, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, was formed in 1983 by Marie
Osmond, John Schneider, Mick Shannon and Joe Lake as what started out as a Telethon. The
company then quickly expanded into a major non profit organization. Throughout the late 20th
century, CMN employed multiple fundraising tactics and acquired various corporate and celebrity
sponsors (About Us, 2016). Since 1983, CMN has raised over $5 billion to aid over 170
children s hospitals, support research, help families financially and generate awareness
(Financials, 2016). CMN governance consist of President and CEO John Lauck, a 17 member
board, and 155 paid staff members (Charity Report Children s Miracle Network, 2016). In 2014,
employment costs totaled $16,882,159 (Audit, 2014). As defined in CMN s 2014 audit, partnering
hospitals (170 hospitals as of 2016) must pay a membership fee and license in order to participate
in fundraising and awareness campaigns. Funds raised become unrestricted, however the hospital
becomes CMN s sole licensee.

interesting to read unlike other business textbook. As a novel, the book is entertaining but at the
same time, very informative for management or accounting students as well as for the real life
company managers and CEOs who wanted to apply different managerial practices. The paper
summarizes the novel and makes analyses in relation to Operations Management.

high efficiencies you must be running your robots constantly? Alex said yes and Jonah continued
with predictions that the plant s inventory is very high and Alex s plant can not deliver products on

Through that conversation, Alex realized that productivity is the act of bringing a company closer
to its goal ( 1992). Alex thought the company s goal is to increase efficiencies but he later
realized that every company s goal, including his plant, is to make money or to be profitable and
anything that comes closer to the goal is considered as productive.
Due to this realization, the next thing he did was to talk to the plant s accountants to determine how
the company can make money. The company will have money if the net profit increased along with

The Rise Of The Roman And Ottoman Empires
With every empire that ever existed, there were highs and lows that contributed to their rise as well
as their fall in power each one somehow contributing to the rise of the next empire. Three great
empires that are perfect examples of this are the Roman, Mongolian and Ottoman Empires.
Regarding the rise and fall of these empires, there were differences that set them apart, however,
there are several similarities that merit a thorough examination, with the Roman Empirehaving the
greatest influence on society today. Factors that contributed to the rise of the Roman, Mongolian
and Ottoman Empires involve the following: some sort of unification whether it be political or
geographical; a strong army; and expansion. During Augustus Caesar s rule of the Roman Empire,
he brought political stability to his people by defeating Rome s enemies, and preserving aristocracy,
the Senate, the elected Roman magistracy, and Roman citizenship (Wallech et al., 2013). In the
Mongolian Empire, Temujin, known later as Genghis Khan, also defeated all his rivals and became
the leader of Mongolian tribes (May, 2008). Under his rule, the tribes of Mongolia were unified
into a single supra tribe also known as the All Mongol State (May, 2008). The Ottoman Empire
attracted and united those who roamed across the Middle East searching for means to gain their
livelihoods and seeking to fulfill their religious desire to expand the territory of Islam (Yapp Shaw,
2017). All three empires also

business must know what it is good at to be able to effectively have a competitive advantage over
other businesses within that industry. The profitability of Mylan Pharmaceuticals largely depends
on their ability to discover and market new drugs. The desire to cure illness and disease is what
demands pharmaceutical companies like Mylan to be empowered to do their very best. Companies

Women s Conditions In The Victorian Age
For many years, women have been considered inferior to men and, as a consequence, they have
been subservient to men and to their own families. For instance, they had to be chaste, obedient,
sympathetic, powerless, they could not go out when they wanted or dressed as they liked, but they
were expected to stay at home and dedicated themselves to the education of children and to the
domestic cleaning.
In the history of the United Kingdom, an important period that contributed to the subsequent
independence of women was the Victorian Age. During this era, we can identify three types of
women:
Women who belonged to the nobility class; they were educated and they had the opportunity to
enjoy a luxurious life.
Middle class women; one of their main goals was to marry a noble man in order ... Show more

Essay The Role And Functions Of New Zealand Government
The New Zealand Government has made significant changes to the economy throughout the last 15
years. The operation and organisation of business activity in New Zealand has been affected by this
changing economy. All aspects of the New Zealand Government have been altered. The reason for
this change was to improve the performance by being more efficient. The key reforms are
privatisation and corporatisation of State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) and restructuring government
agencies.
The most significant change was the election of the Labour Party in 1984, which ended the
Muldoon Administration. At this time, New Zealandwas in a rut because of poor economic
management by the previous Government. Unemployment was high in 1983 and still ... Show more

Some restructuring and reforms affected these sectors.
The New Zealand Government owned many enterprises such as State Insurance, Air New
Zealand, New Zealand Rail, The Bank of New Zealand, and Telecom. In 1987 most of these assets
were sold. By doing this it meant the Government could pay off large accumulated debts and allow
these companies to become more efficient. After the sale of these SOEs that the New Zealand
Government has become more efficient too, they can focus on their primary task by providing
essential services. Some of these services include public hospitals, education, benefits, and
emergency relief.
From the reforms came a radical change in New Zealand trade. In 1984 the Government devalued
the New Zealand Dollar by 20%, then in 1985 introduced a floating exchange rate. Along with that,
the removal of agricultural subsidies and import tariffs. It allowed New Zealand to be a fairer
country to trade with. As a direct result, the trade competitive index jumped from 0.72 on 1985 to
0.98 in 1987. Foreign investment increased as the New Zealand Dollar strengthened against the
green back and the pound. Consequently, importing and exporting firms benefited from the change
in policies.
The services that the New Zealand Government provides have ongoing restructuring (which means
altering an already established department) in the State Sector. The State Sector Act 1988, which

Now I understand that the two of you believe that marijuana is a gateway drug but I have done
excessive research and I can assure you that it is in in no shape or form a gateway drug . The
gateway theory argues that because heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine users often used
marijuana before graduating to harder drugs, it must be a gateway to harder drug use. The
theory implies that there is a causal mechanism that biologically sensitizes drug users, making
them more willing to try and more desirous of harder drugs. Yet the gateway hypothesis doesn t
make sense to those who use marijuana or have used in the past. Research shows that the vast
majority of marijuana users do not go on to use hard drugs. Many users compare their daily
cannabis habit with dependency on caffeine. The UK Department of Health say Cannabis is a
weakly addictive drug but does induce dependence in a significant minority of heavy users. If you
are a regular cannabis smoker (every day) and you stop smoking, you will experience some of the
following withdrawal symptoms: restlessness, irritability, mild agitation, insomnia, nausea, sleep
disturbance, sweats, and intense dreams. These symptoms, however, are mild and short lived,
lasting 2 to 4 days. With such negligible withdrawal symptoms, it is not surprising that quitting
marijuana is so easy, especially for someone with very strong will power, such as myself.

Studies have shown women taking folic acid before pregnancy gave birth to healthier children. The
finding showed significant reductions in serious birth defects of the children. Folic acid is an
essential nutrient if you are trying to conceive or now pregnant. It becomes a staple for women

Too many women in this age range fail to get ample amounts of folic acid. The sad part, the

Characteristics Of Plato s Allegory Of The Cave
Introduction
In this paper, I will argue that Plato s Allegory of the Cave is a good representation of our
relationship to the media in the United States.
To make this argument, I will first outline the characteristics of Plato s cave.
Second I will argue that Plato s Allegory of the Cave is a good representation of our relationship to
the media in the United States.
Third, I will entertain the most persuasive possible counterargument to my view, which is that the
United States media is not a good representation of the media in the United States.
Fourth, I will refute this counterargument (counterargument, not argument) by giving examples of
how some media sources cherry pick what to tell and what not to say to the public. So the public
does not have all the facts.
Finally, I will conclude my paper by summarizing the main lines of argument in it and reiterating
thesis that Plato s Allegory of the Cave is a good representation of our relationship to the media in
the United States.
Outline
I will now outline the characteristics of Plato s Allegory of the cave. In the Allegory of the Cave,
Plato distinguishes between people who mistake sensory knowledge for the truth and people who
do see the fact. It goes like this: Imagine a cave, in which there are three prisoners. The prisoners
are constrained to some rocks, their arms and legs are bound, and their head is tied so that they
cannot look at anything but the stonewall in front of them. These prisoners have been here since

Native American Art Of Navajo Blanket Weaving Essay
Native American Art of the Navajo Blanket Weaving
Ingrid Anderson

Native American Art of the Navajo Blanket Weaving
Native Americans are the indigenous people of the North American continent and the cultural
traditions and art forms are unique to these regional groups. The people in these groups have
several names and the first adopted name Indian by Spanish explorers proved erroneous, however,
now accepted names include either American Indian or Native American. I will refer to these
groups as Native Americans or by their tribal affiliation. There are diverse tribal groups original to
North America who lived on the Great Plains, in the Woodlands, on the Northwest coast, and in the
Southeast or the Southwest regions. Various Native American tribes created art forms such as the
Apache, Cherokee, Pueblo, and Hopi communities. In my research, I found that the Navajo also
contributed in many ways to Native American art through making jewelry, beading, drawing,
painting, sculpting, carving, and weaving. These art works provided their tribe notoriety with
countless years of experience through their creativity and sense of design , lending to an
astonishing volume and variety of artwork which has created a lasting legacy , per NativeAmerican
Art.com (2010). Understandably, art comes in various forms and from various cultures, but the
Native American Navajo tribe contributed vastly and merits mention for its beautiful contributions.

Women During The Civil War
The American Civil War was a time of pronounced racial and gender role changes. Despite political
tension and fighting, many women began to hold a variety of jobs in order to make valuable
contributions to the war effort. Moreover, a patriarchal government governed the effects of slavery
and the economy. Nonetheless, the influence women had during the Civil War tends to be
minimized, especially African Americanwomen. Despite facing discrimination, black women
greatly influenced the war effort. The discrimination they faced is most prominently seen through
wage disparities between white and black female workers and the pensions black women were
denied when the war came to an end. One such occupation African American women held were as...

Approximately 750,000 men died; a death toll greater than those who passed in all other
American wars combined. This means soldiers were dying at incredibly high rates and as a result,
there was a great need for medical personnel in both hospitals and the battlefield. Most of these
numbers are said to be the result of illnesses such as dysentery, small pox, malaria and typhoid
which killed more soldiers than battle wounds. Because of this, many African American women
took on different jobs to contribute to the war effort such as becoming nurses.
Although most nurses tended to be men during the war, a vast amount of females were joining the
effort. According to historians, approximately 2000 females worked as nurses in both the North
and the South. Record books show that African American nurses served in both the Union and
Confederate hospitals. US government hospitals in Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina had as
many 181 black female and male nurses. Nonetheless; the Civil War would determine the fate of
slavery as a result of the nation s refusal to compromise on the issue between the North and the
South. The dividing factor was indeed the institution of slavery and the effect slavery had on the
economy. During the 19th century, the north was industrializing; its economy began to rely more
on wage laborers rather than slaves. The South s farming economy, however, remained to rely

Maus Spiegelman
Maus avoids betraying the historical past that it depicts through its aesthetic usage of panels and
gutters, representing the complex intertwining of the past and the present. Comics are comprised of
panels, which are used to divide up narrative events, and gutters, the empty space between each
panel. The illustrator can manipulate the thinness of the gutters, facilitating the reading process of
each row of panels and allowing the gutter to function as a literal depiction of time and space
within a comic (Chute 202). The essence of comics, according to Spiegelman, is that each box
represents a different moment of time and the reader sees them all at once, resulting in his
awareness of the different times inhabiting the same space ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For instance, Vladek retells his strenuous POW work, in which he had to clean an entire stable up
within an hour. He then interrupts himself and interjects, But look what you do, Artie! You re
dropping on the carpet cigarette ashes. You want it should be like a stable here? (MausI 52). Joshua
Brown identifies this incident as one out of the numerous interstices of testimony, in which the
readers learn more about Vladek and Artie (Brown 95). These narrative breaks remind the reader
that Vladek s account is not a chronicle of undefiled fact but a constitutive process and that
remembering is a construction of the past (Brown 95). When Vladek describes his daily work
schedule at Auschwitz, the panel depicts the prisoners marching in an orderly fashion right next to
an orchestra, and Spiegelman had put it in there as he had just read about the camp orchestra that
played as the prisoners marched out the gate (Maus II 54). Vladek tells him that he remember[s]
only marching, not any orchestras, despite Artie s claim that the Auschwitz orchestra was very well
documented and reiterates the first panel within the third one but without the orchestra (Maus II
54). In short, Spiegelman has used the advantages stemming from the conventions of a comic book
to create a coherent presentation. Manifesting these verbal parallels of the past and the present
would be incredibly complicated in a book and would most likely confuse the readers due to the

The Ethics Of Energy And Environment
When I was a kid,I saw a show in which a criminal investigator caught the murderer by
performing some chemical tests on a small amount of liquid left at the crime scene. What
fascinated me the most about this incident was the magical way in which answers could be found
from seemingly ordinary objects by using a few reagents. I became a regular follower of such
shows and thus began my love for Chemistry. During my undergraduate studies, I discovered that
Analytical Chemistryformed the backbone of these so called magical techniques, which further
influenced me to get a higher degree in Analytical Chemistry. Another topic that gave me inspiration
toward chemistry was sustainability of energy and environment. Being a citizen of a developing
country, I observed energy crisis and environmental pollution first hand. I want to contribute to
solve this problem by pursuing higher studies in Environmental chemistry, as it will enable me to
use my intellectual potentials for the betterment of the environment and in turn the society.
My past academic accomplishments bear a testament of my future endeavors. I achieved the GPA
of 5.00 in the scale of 5.00 in both the secondary and higher secondary studies. The desire for an
exhilarating career in the field of chemistry motivated me to apply to the department of Applied
Chemistry
Chemical Engineering, University of Dhaka, which is the oldest and most prestigious university in
Bangladesh. The program had a well structured and comprehensive

Bisphenol A in polycarbonate is not a Serious Hazard to...
Is the Bisphenol A in polycarbonate a serious hazard to human health?
Abstract: Polycarbonate, which is a polymer plastic, is found in many bottles and food packaging
around the world. However, because Bisphenol A is used in the processing of it, there is a
potential danger to humans. Bisphenol A is a molecule that is a hormone inhibitor and also mirrors
the function of estrogen. Although the EPA has released a safe level for Bisphenol Aingestion,
recent research has shown that those levels may not be safe for humans. Until further testing is
done, scientists aren t certain of the threshold of BPA intake in humans before dangerous health
effects occur.

However, it is the molecule of Bisphenol A that is causing the most problems with the
polycarbonate.
Bisphenol A s molecular formula is C15H16O2 and a molecular mass of 288.29.
Three million tons of this hazardous polymer is produced yearly1. At room temperature, it is a
white solid and has a phenolic odor. 2 This chemical is an endocrine disrupter, and its presence in
large quantities within the body would probably be fatal. Tests have been done on rats with
exposure to BPA which shows that it raises levels of hormones such as prolactin in both males and
females as well as lowering the level of testosterone. 3 Studies have shown that BPA is comparative
to the estrogen hormone, as supported by those test results on rats. The Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) has set the level of safe exposure to BPA at 50 О

based on research that was done in the
1980s. 4 More recent studies have said that intake at that level would still be seriously

Essay on The Red Badge of Courage
The Red Badge of Courage
The Red Badge of Courage, by Steven Crane, has been considered one of the greatest war novels
of all time. It is a story that realistically depicts the American Civil War through the eyes of Henry
Fleming, an ordinary farm boy who decides to become a soldier.
Henry is very determined to become a hero, and the story tells Henrys voyage from being a young
coward to becoming a brave man. This voyage is the classic trip from innocence to experience.
To begin, the story starts out with a huge debate between the soldiers. One boy had heard a rumor
that the regiment would be moving on to fight a battle the next day.
Some of the soldiers agree with this boy. Others think that their regiment will never go ... Show

Tom and Henry talk about how they are not going to run away from war, and how they want to
become big time war heroes. This is weird because in the end of the book you will find that their
wishes come true. When the battle starts, all the soldiers get very anxious and nervous. Tom and
Henry don t turn out to be as brave as they think that they could be. While hiding, Tom finds
Henry, and gives him an envelope of letters for his family. Tom believes that this will be his first
and his last battle.
Henry ends up fulfilling his worst nightmare. Instead of sticking out the battle with the rest of his
regiment, he hides behind some brush in order to spare himself from getting shot.
He listens in on the battle, and to much of his surprise, he hears cheering from what s left of his
regiment. He then takes off into the woods in anger. While running through the woods his
conscience begins to speak to him. He keeps telling himself that he is a coward and a deserter. Out
of guilt, Henry runs back to the battle site, and meets again with his regiment. These actions
showed Henry s maturity and desire to be a war hero.
When Henry meets back up with his regiment an older man begins to have a discussion with him.
The old man asks Henry where yuh hit, ol boy? . With massive feelings of guilt, Henry shrugs
away from the man and runs back into the woods. From behind a tree, he can see all the wounded
soldiers on the battle field. At times he regarded

The Criminal Justice System Essay
The construction of the criminal the justice system composes of various agencies with explicit
procedures to control and diminish crimes along with, implementing penalties on those in violation
of the laws. During the seventeenth century, society and the criminal justice system focused
primarily on punishment than deterrence, and as society evolved, the criminal justice system
manifested. The criminal justice system was not as complex and intricate as it is today. Beginning
with the founding of our Country, the creation of the United States Constitution, our government
has created substantial amounts of legislative materials, including, laws and regulations, to ensure
due process and minimize criminal acts and behaviors. Our government has looked to all the local
and state officials, in joining forces to reduce crimein our states and cities.
Law enforcement agencies are our first line of defense in protecting society from the effects of
crime. Numerous strategies law enforcement agencies utilize across the United States to control
crime, some demonstrated effectiveness while others were refuted or unsubstantiated. Controlling
crime encompasses a combination of strategies rather than a single strategy.

Homelessness
Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States, located between the two larger cities in
central Florida those being Tampa to the west and Orlando to the east. While interventions to
interrupt and end homelessness may vary across groups, ending homelessness permanently requires
housing combined with the types of services supported by programs operated by the U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This paper will address demographics for the
area, identify the social issue of homelessness, and address using a social action model for
community change, and the strengths and weaknesses of the model.
According to the United States Census Bureau estimate, Lakeland had a population of 100,710
(US Census Bureau, 2006). According to the Lakeland Economic Development Council, the
numbers of existing households in 2013 were 41,833 (2013). The average household income in
2013 for Lakeland was $50,064, with the median household income at $36,495. The average hourly
wage in 2013 was $18.18. Lakelands labor force for 2013 was 42,658. There were 39521 employed
in 2013. The unemployed number was 3137 for 2013, setting the population of the unemployed
for Lakeland at 7.40%. However, in 2013 the job growth raised only .37% (City of Lakeland,

How Does Marjane Use Forgiveness In Persepolis
Persepolis Essay #1 Marjane Satrapi is a girl who lives in a country ruled by a man not loved by
the people. It is a place where many struggles happen and where she is forced to grow up and
understand the things happening around her. The author of this book conveys the theme of
forgiveness through internal conflict and her use of comics and images in the Persepolis novel. In
the beginning of the novel, Marjane has her life turned around when the shah of her country, Iran,
started passing many rules and regulations, which the people did not like. As a result, the people
started to protest in the streets and many would get hurt or worse trying voice their beliefs. An
example of how this led to Marjane believing the wrong things about people from what she heard
from others is... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At least for now, Marjane is being taught to see things in a new light and this will help her in the
way the her mother intends. On the other hand, while Marjane s mother struggles to correctly
teach her 10 year old daughter how to forgive, she and her husband still participate in the
demonstrations taking place around their town instead of setting a better example for their
daughter. In a way, while Marjane s mother tries to teach her one thing, her actions and the things
she says with her father and the outside world may teach Marjane otherwise. They both talk about
the injustice of the regime in their country freely and openly in front of Marjane without even
thinking about the way they could be sending mixed messages to their daughter. An example of
how this has affected Marjane is the way her mother reacts when they find someone close to them
was executed while in prison and how two other family friends, at their reunion described the way
they were tortured and how their other cell mate, a member of the guerillas, was also executed

  • 2. Game Theory Reflection My independent study on Game Theory this past semester has been an extremely rewarding experience. It has pushed me to learn more about myself, to approach the world with new perspectives, to see similarities across discipline, and to cross apply knowledge to improve my models. I was drawn into Game Theory because of its wide range of applications across academic disciplines like economics, biology, and history as well as in real life situations like bargaining and getting loans. In my independent proposal and my first blog post, I have established exploring the real world applications of Game Theoryas one of my major goals this semester. Since the start of September, I ve been watching Game Theory courses on Yale Open Courseware and doing weekly problem sets accompanying the lectures. The diverse examples Professor Polak used to illustrate complex concepts confirmed my previous beliefs that Game Theory is not an isolated and purely theoretical subject, but is developed to answer human curiosities and our needs. These lectures not only taught me to draw payoff matrices and decision tree to figure out best responses to hypothetical situation but also to see the similarities in life situations through the perspectives of simplistic mathematic models. For example, the generalized prisoner s dilemma model that involves two players and two strategies can be used to explain the necessity of roommate contract, procrastination in group projects, or grades inflation in the ... • 3. The Segregation Of The South Segregation in the South Introduction According to Merriam Webster the word segregation was first known to be used in 1555. It is defined as the separation or isolation of a race, class, or ethnic group by enforcing or voluntary residence in a restricted area, by barriers to social intercourse, by separate educational facilities, or by other discriminatory means. The United States underwent vast transformations, especially in the South. New political, social, and economic systems emerged that transformed the South from a rural, slave based society, to an increasingly urban, industrialized, free labor society. The changes to the social, political, and economic landscape of the South prompted an unprecedented era of racial violence throughout the region (Jett, p.40). The Southern states deemed slavery was crucial to safeguard white superiority. The past plays a big part in the future when it comes to dividends, if there has been a strong growth in dividends in the past then future dividend growth is predicted signaling a strong bottom line and profits for the company. Advantages of the DDM are that it is frequently used when calculating share prices, due to it being easily taught and its simplicity making it easy to understand. DDM also has the ability to give value to a company s stock, disregarding the current market making it easy to compare across different companies and industries big or small. Another advantage is the models rely firmly on theory and also its ability to stay consistent over the lifetime of the company. Disadvantages of the DDM include the model itself not appreciating certain factors such as customer and brand loyalty and the ownership of intangible assets. Factors that are vital towards the success value of a company. Another disadvantage is the DDM being highly dependent on the assumption of the company s growth in dividends believing that it s rate is stable and known. Surface Of Mercury Research Paper The surface of Mercury is very rocky, and has many pits and craters on it due to the large number of meteors that have collided with the surface over the years. According to all all observations that muggle spacecraft has made, the surface of Mercury is dead, with no signs of life or liquid water. This is largely due to its lack of atmosphere and extreme temperatures. Also due to the lack of atmosphere, Mercury has no weather or wind, and the surface has few distinguishing features such as riverbeds or dust storms. Much of the surface is similar to the surface of Earths moon. Beneath the surface of mercury is a solid core, which is very rich in iron deposits. Victims, criminals and their families are touched by the outcomes of crime. Crime has increased over the years and is continuing to do so. The city of Memphis has experienced a great increase of crime. Memphis Policehave developed initiatives to reduce crime, using federally funded programs. Unfortunately, crime problems such as theft, assaults and homicide have become irrepressible over the last three years. The rate of homicide in Memphis is more typical of cities of its size. Assaults were accounted for 65 percent of deaths in the area. (Kellermann, Rivara Lee,1996,p.1438 1440). The Uniformed Crime Report (UCR) is very successful for keeping track with the rates of these crimes. The environment, the personality of the perpetrator and genetics has all been factors to blame for criminal behavior. Although, these factors have potential to play a role in the reasoning behind criminal acts, they will have to be supported. Criminological theories can hold the context to support the evidence of these factors. Understanding crime and developing strategies are the keys in taking the step to initiate a strategic plan. Culture is the characteristic way of behaving and believing that a group of people have developed over time and share in common (Briscoe, Schuler Tarique, 2012). Whilst globalization is undoubtedly an important aspect of economic activity, it is less significant in its scale and consequences than some enthusiasts claim (Scholte, 2005). In particular, The Hours features three women who each have same sex experiences Virginia Woolf , Laura Brown, and Clarissa Vaughn. At the time, Marie Antoinette was distrusted because of her foreign birth and many of the peasants saw her as the source of their problems and disliked her. Many see Marie Antoinette as a victim of her own circumstances, as it can be seen by the state of affairs in France before her arrival, her upbringing and public opinion before her death during the French Revolution. This essay will illustrate that Marie Antoinette was indeed a victim of her circumstances. However, on the other hand, if Berowne truly loved Rosaline, it is perplexing that he should love the worst of all, describing her eyes as two pitch balls stuck in her face. This is not a flattering description at all, and if Berowne feels this way about Rosaline, it is not clear as to why he has trouble keeping his vow; it is almost as if Berowne is more interested in the performance of love than the beloved herself. It also likely has to do with the fact that Berowne does not want to follow the oath, and is looking for a way out and it would seem that this is true for the other men as well. However, medicalized births are becoming increasingly popular in the United States. The use of technology and medical interventions in the birthing process has increased despite the unchanged basic physiology of childbirth. One of the most common medical interventions in the birthing process is having a cesarean delivery. Despite the known risks of having a cesarean section performed, the rates of this procedure have increased much higher than the acceptable rate of 10 15% as recommended by the World Health Organization. This is due to the reason that cesarean sections are now being performed as a matter of convenience of the physician or at the request of the patient more often than being performed as a life saving intervention. • 26. The Rise Of The Roman And Ottoman Empires With every empire that ever existed, there were highs and lows that contributed to their rise as well as their fall in power each one somehow contributing to the rise of the next empire. Three great empires that are perfect examples of this are the Roman, Mongolian and Ottoman Empires. Regarding the rise and fall of these empires, there were differences that set them apart, however, there are several similarities that merit a thorough examination, with the Roman Empirehaving the greatest influence on society today. Factors that contributed to the rise of the Roman, Mongolian and Ottoman Empires involve the following: some sort of unification whether it be political or geographical; a strong army; and expansion. During Augustus Caesar s rule of the Roman Empire, he brought political stability to his people by defeating Rome s enemies, and preserving aristocracy, the Senate, the elected Roman magistracy, and Roman citizenship (Wallech et al., 2013). In the Mongolian Empire, Temujin, known later as Genghis Khan, also defeated all his rivals and became the leader of Mongolian tribes (May, 2008). Under his rule, the tribes of Mongolia were unified into a single supra tribe also known as the All Mongol State (May, 2008). The Ottoman Empire attracted and united those who roamed across the Middle East searching for means to gain their livelihoods and seeking to fulfill their religious desire to expand the territory of Islam (Yapp Shaw, 2017). For instance, they had to be chaste, obedient, sympathetic, powerless, they could not go out when they wanted or dressed as they liked, but they were expected to stay at home and dedicated themselves to the education of children and to the domestic cleaning. In the history of the United Kingdom, an important period that contributed to the subsequent independence of women was the Victorian Age. The gateway theory argues that because heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine users often used marijuana before graduating to harder drugs, it must be a gateway to harder drug use. The theory implies that there is a causal mechanism that biologically sensitizes drug users, making them more willing to try and more desirous of harder drugs. Yet the gateway hypothesis doesn t make sense to those who use marijuana or have used in the past. Research shows that the vast majority of marijuana users do not go on to use hard drugs. Many users compare their daily cannabis habit with dependency on caffeine. The UK Department of Health say Cannabis is a weakly addictive drug but does induce dependence in a significant minority of heavy users. If you are a regular cannabis smoker (every day) and you stop smoking, you will experience some of the following withdrawal symptoms: restlessness, irritability, mild agitation, insomnia, nausea, sleep disturbance, sweats, and intense dreams. Characteristics Of Plato s Allegory Of The Cave Introduction In this paper, I will argue that Plato s Allegory of the Cave is a good representation of our relationship to the media in the United States. To make this argument, I will first outline the characteristics of Plato s cave. Second I will argue that Plato s Allegory of the Cave is a good representation of our relationship to the media in the United States. Third, I will entertain the most persuasive possible counterargument to my view, which is that the United States media is not a good representation of the media in the United States. Fourth, I will refute this counterargument (counterargument, not argument) by giving examples of how some media sources cherry pick what to tell and what not to say to the public. So the public does not have all the facts. Finally, I will conclude my paper by summarizing the main lines of argument in it and reiterating thesis that Plato s Allegory of the Cave is a good representation of our relationship to the media in the United States. In the Allegory of the Cave, Plato distinguishes between people who mistake sensory knowledge for the truth and people who do see the fact. Native American Art Of Navajo Blanket Weaving Essay Native American Art of the Navajo Blanket Weaving Ingrid Anderson Governors State University Native American Art of the Navajo Blanket Weaving Native Americans are the indigenous people of the North American continent and the cultural traditions and art forms are unique to these regional groups. The people in these groups have several names and the first adopted name Indian by Spanish explorers proved erroneous, however, now accepted names include either American Indian or Native American. I will refer to these groups as Native Americans or by their tribal affiliation. There are diverse tribal groups original to North America who lived on the Great Plains, in the Woodlands, on the Northwest coast, and in the Southeast or the Southwest regions. Various Native American tribes created art forms such as the Apache, Cherokee, Pueblo, and Hopi communities. In my research, I found that the Navajo also contributed in many ways to Native American art through making jewelry, beading, drawing, painting, sculpting, carving, and weaving. These art works provided their tribe notoriety with countless years of experience through their creativity and sense of design , lending to an astonishing volume and variety of artwork which has created a lasting legacy , per NativeAmerican Art.com (2010). Approximately 750,000 men died; a death toll greater than those who passed in all other American wars combined. This means soldiers were dying at incredibly high rates and as a result, there was a great need for medical personnel in both hospitals and the battlefield. Most of these numbers are said to be the result of illnesses such as dysentery, small pox, malaria and typhoid which killed more soldiers than battle wounds. Because of this, many African American women took on different jobs to contribute to the war effort such as becoming nurses. Although most nurses tended to be men during the war, a vast amount of females were joining the effort. According to historians, approximately 2000 females worked as nurses in both the North and the South. Record books show that African American nurses served in both the Union and Confederate hospitals. US government hospitals in Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina had as many 181 black female and male nurses. Nonetheless; the Civil War would determine the fate of slavery as a result of the nation s refusal to compromise on the issue between the North and the South. The dividing factor was indeed the institution of slavery and the effect slavery had on the economy. Comics are comprised of panels, which are used to divide up narrative events, and gutters, the empty space between each panel. The illustrator can manipulate the thinness of the gutters, facilitating the reading process of each row of panels and allowing the gutter to function as a literal depiction of time and space within a comic (Chute 202). He then interrupts himself and interjects, But look what you do, Artie! You re dropping on the carpet cigarette ashes. You want it should be like a stable here? (MausI 52). Joshua Brown identifies this incident as one out of the numerous interstices of testimony, in which the readers learn more about Vladek and Artie (Brown 95). These narrative breaks remind the reader that Vladek s account is not a chronicle of undefiled fact but a constitutive process and that remembering is a construction of the past (Brown 95). When Vladek describes his daily work schedule at Auschwitz, the panel depicts the prisoners marching in an orderly fashion right next to an orchestra, and Spiegelman had put it in there as he had just read about the camp orchestra that played as the prisoners marched out the gate (Maus II 54). Vladek tells him that he remember[s] only marching, not any orchestras, despite Artie s claim that the Auschwitz orchestra was very well documented and reiterates the first panel within the third one but without the orchestra (Maus II 54).
