This document discusses enterprise architecture (EA). It defines EA as the continuous practice of describing the essential elements of a socio-technical organization, their relationships to each other and to the environment, in order to understand complexity and manage change. EA emerged as an approach to describe an enterprise's business processes and the technology needed to support its business processes. The current state of EA research focuses on how EA can help organizations adapt to change, understand relationships between business and IT, and achieve alignment. EA is related to enterprise engineering, which applies engineering techniques to create working enterprise systems through a process of planning, description, and construction.
