ECONOMIC NEWS
➢ The government is considering raising the minimum support price (MSP)
of paddy by Rs 80 per quintal to Rs 1,550 for the upcoming 2017-18 crop
year starting from July. The MSP of paddy was fixed at Rs 1,470 for the
common grade and Rs 1,510 for the 'A' grade variety for the 2016-17 crop
year that ends next month. According to sources, the agriculture ministry
has moved a Cabinet note for inter-ministerial consultation and the
proposal is likely to get the Cabinet nod soon. The ministry has proposed
Rs 80 per quintal increase in the paddy MSP for 2017-18 crop year. The
suggested MSP for the common grade is Rs 1,550 and that of the 'A' grade
Rs 1,590. The price increase proposed for paddy, however, is slightly
higher than the Rs 60 hike effected during the 2016- 17 crop year. The
proposed rates are in line with the recommendations of the expert body
Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP).
➢ As consumers try innovative ice creams, tender coconut is getting a
nearly 20% slice of the natural flavour market. Ice cream companies are
spurring tender coconut sales as consumers show increasing preference for
the nut among natural product flavours. The tender coconut flavoured ice
creams have become a big draw, especially in South India, which accounts
for 90% of coconut production in India. "People here have an affinity for
tender coconuts and hence they have taken a fancy for it," said Johnson
Joseph, marketing manager of Kerala-based Meriiboy Ice Cream, which
sort of pioneered the flavour in these parts. Among its natural products
flavours, tender coconut is the top selling special flavour and accounts for
nearly 20% share of sales. Other ice cream companies have been cottoning
in on the demand. It is a fast selling flavour for Lazza Ice Creams, a major
company. “Apart from Kerala, tender coconut flavour is much sought after
in metros like Bengaluru and Chennai. Jackfruit is another flavour that is
picking up in demand,"said J Hashim, CEO of Lazza Ice Cream.
➢ Soybean futures traded marginally higher on NCDEX as speculators
enlarged their positions due to good meal exports data. However, some
gains were capped by lower prices at overseas markets following a key
US government report forecasting higher supplies. The contract for
May delivery was trading at Rs 2852.00, up by 0.28% or Rs 8.00 from
its previous closing of Rs 2844.00. The open interest of the contract
stood at 17070 lots. The contract for June delivery was trading at Rs
2941.00, up by 0.51% or Rs 15.00 from its previous closing of Rs
2926.00.
➢ Jeera futures edged higher on NCDEX on anticipation of rising
domestic as well as exports demand at the spot market. Further, the
arrivals have been lower during first 7 days of May compared to April
also added support to jeera prices’ uptrend. Reports showed about
2,450 tons of jeera arrived in May (1-7) compared to 7,997 in April (1-
7). The contract for May delivery was trading at Rs 18400, up by
1.15% or Rs 210.00 from its previous closing of Rs 18190. The open
interest of the contract stood at 930 lots. The contract for June delivery
was trading at Rs 18590, up by 0.98% or Rs 180.00 from its previous
closing of Rs 18410.
➢ Coriander futures traded higher on NCDEX as speculators built up
fresh positions on the back of rising demand in the spot market.
Besides, tight stock positions following limited arrivals from major
producing belts also added support to coriander prices’ uptrend. The
contract for May delivery was trading at Rs 5760.00, up by 0.96% or
Rs 55.00 from its previous closing of Rs 5705.00. The open interest of
the contract stood at 6980 lots. The contract for June delivery was
trading at Rs 5849.00, up by 0.93% or Rs 54.00 from its previous
closing of Rs 5795.00.
