Jean Webster was an American author born in 1876 who wrote popular books focused on smart, independent female protagonists. She grew up in a house surrounded by strong women and attended Vassar College. Her most famous works, Daddy Long Legs and When Patty Went to College, were humorous stories that also brought social awareness to women's issues. She died in 1916 after visiting orphanages and charity homes for inspiration and drawing attention to women's rights through her writing.
