This document is a student project on the topic of generation gaps. 6. ABSTRACT
Background: Time waits for none and is constantly changing with every blink of our eye and so is our
perspective, values and habits. Some people evolve and accommodate themselves with the changing
world and other have apparently remained where they were thirty or forty years up the ladder. When
people resist change and try to sustain with a bygone perspective amidst the changing world, there
exists a tendency of clash between the people of one generation with the other. This is known as
generation gap. This gap between the generations is inevitable because every generation comes up
with something new in their minds. It is best if both the generations try to understand each other
and cooperate to coexist harmoniously.
Method: This study used a mixed research approach of survey and an interview schedule.
Results: The majority of participants believe that generational differences generate problems at
work and in friendships. The majority of people believe that people's stubbornness in sticking to
their thought process is the cause of generation gaps. More than half of the participants said they
were having a range of issues due to the generation gap but that they were eager to resolve it.
Conclusion: The study recommends that understanding someone else's thought process and
keeping an open mind works best to bridge the generation gap.

7. OBJECTIVES
This study tries to explore the prevailing status of generation gap that
exists among the people of different age groups and their perceptions
about the same. Every person has a different perspective and may
even be confronting for some. It is essential to handle such issues
sensitively. Our work tries locate all such possibilities to bridge this
widening gap.
The objectives of the study were to investigate:

9. A generation gap refers to the chasm separating the beliefs and behaviors belonging
to two different generations. A generation gap is a term that describes the
differences in attitudes, behaviors, exposure and preferences between members of
younger and older generations.
Differences may be in politics, values, pop culture and other sectors. These
differences stem from older and younger people not understanding each other
because of their differences in experiences, opinions, habits, and behavior. While
generation gaps have existed throughout history, they have expanded in the early
twenty-first century.

10. History of GENERATION GAP
Generation gap was introduced in the 1920s, but the real cause lies in the 1950s when the
soldiers returned from the wars and joined their families. The veterans faced a challenging
environment; the reason they resent the youth who were highly affected by rock culture.
Furthermore, in the 1980s, at the dawn of the television age, the new generation was wholly
disconnected from their elders. At the time of independence, the Western lifestyle was
acquired by Indians. At that time, the senior age group's fervent devotion towards their own
country highly abominated the current amusement media. An additional ground for aforesaid
was that many populations had moved to the progressive cities, and there was an intense
hindrance between the burgess & the rustic. The youngster was fascinated by the vitality of
the city. This caused the lifestyle of people has converted desperately. The elders gave
priority to the traditional way of working and thinking; besides that, youngsters were
disgruntled with the constant condemnation of the seniors, having a dependency on alcoholic
drinks, smoking, and other substances. They move up towards rapid and adventurous life,
whereas the elders promote a healthy, unflagging and well-balanced lifestyle. Similarly, other
elements as globalism, development in intercommunications also generate space between
generations.

12. MILLENNIALS
Millennials have always known cable TV, pagers, answering
machines, laptop computers, and video games. Technological
advancements in real-time media and communication have
driven their expectation for immediacy. They are the generation
that bridges the gap of growing up in a world before and after the
Internet. They were hit hard by the Great Recession, hurting the
long-term outlook of their finances.

Coming of Age: 1998-2006
Current Population: 71 million
How are GENERATIONS distinguished
GENERATION Z
This is the first generation that grew up with the Internet as a fact of
life, not knowing a world without immediate access to information, or
mobile phones. Generation Z was expected to do well financially,
coming of age in a strong economy. The economic crisis of 2020
upended that stability and what comes next is still to be determined.
This generation is racially and ethnically diverse and is similar to
millennials in terms of its social and policy beliefs and is progressive.

13. Reasons for GENERATION gap
1. Lack of understanding: Different generations sometimes seem to speak a different language.
Because of the changes in society from when their parents were growing up to when their
children are growing up, even their way of thinking and what they consider normal has shifted.
1. Mistakes are rarely tolerated: Parents often do not tolerate mistakes and tend to tell their
children off. Children must make errors to learn and grow in life, but punishing them does
nothing but deepen the distance and prevent healthy communication.
1. Children are expected: To Be Replicas Parents often have dreams for their kids, and a lot of the
time, they tend to force them in that direction without considering what their child wants.
1. Too many comparison: Another reason the difference widens is when youngsters are
compared to each other or even to how parents were as a child. This causes individuals to lose
faith in themselves and might suffocate any enthusiasm they may have had previously.
1. Not enough interaction: Parents and children are frequently too exhausted to spend enough
time with each other every day due to the obligations of adulthood and the stress that comes
with working life. As a result, there is a lack of communication and contact, which leads the
generation gap to deepen.

14. Tips to bridge the GENERATION GAP
Understand
With listening comes understanding,
and this means that you have to learn
to put yourself in your child’s/parents
shoes and try to understand how they
feel and what they want from what
they tell you. If you can understand
where your child/parent is coming
from, you will close that
generation gap to some
extent.
Keep An Open Mind
The way that kids think is different from
how parents do. Parents often feel like they
have already been their child's age; they
understand how their child thinks. In contrast,
the child thinks their parents are not the
same age as they will not understand them.
This is why keeping an open mind and not
assuming and talking to each other freely
and keeping an open mind so that parents
and children can understand each
other better.

15. Tips to bridge the GENERATION GAP
Compromise
People, no matter how close they are,
sometimes disagree about topics.
Parents and children are no different;
instead of pressuring each other to think
your way or do what you want, learn to
compromise wherever feasible. Rather
than directing their every step, agreeing
will bring them closer to you and narrow
the generation gap.
Communicate
It is critical to set up a time to interact.
The simple act of discussingeach others day
at the end of the day can help parents and
children get to know each other better and
make it easier for them to speak freely
around each other. Children need to know
that they can come to their parents with
anything, providing parents peace of mind
because they will not have to worry
about their children concealing
importantinformation.

19. CONCLUSION
• 34% of the response were recorded by the
people of age group 40-50. 26% of the
total response was from the people of age
between 30-40. The response from the
youth was the highest which was about
35%.
• The response from the male population
was about 64% while from the female
population it was only 36%.
• According to the survey most people have
never felt a generation gap between their
friends while 14% of the people have
experienced it.
• People have diverse opinion about how do
generation gap affects interaction
between two people.
• Around 48% of people think that
generation gap creates problems in
workplace while 26% people don't agree
with it. The remaining people are confused
about their opinion.
• People have different opinion about what
causes generation gaps to form but most of
the people think that it's due to the mental
gap in term of thinking pattern.
• It can be noticed that majority of the people
don't spend much time with their parents.
• According to the reply of the survey around
50% people find plenty of topics to talk
about with their parents while 40% of the
population find lack of topics when you talk
with your parents.
• 80% of the responses says that they find
difference in opinion which chatting with
their parents while the others don't face this
issue.
• Most of the people also think that there
differences in opinions due to generation
gap and it could be the possible reason for
any kind of disconnect.
• Most of the people believe that the issue of
generation gap can be resolved by sharing
our beliefs and opinions, by understanding
each other's actions and interests.
