it is the placement or use of similar
grammatical forms to express equal
or parallel ideas.
Parallel structures may be two or
more words, two or more phrases,
two or more clauses of the same
type, or two or more sentences of
equal ideas.

4. PARALLELISM
RULE 1 Parallel structure should be
used when elements are joined
by coordinating conjunctions:
Incorrect: I am allergic to the dog’s hair and
how it smells.
Correct: I am allergic to the dog’s hair and
smell.

RULE 2 Parallel structure should be
used when writing
elements in the form of a list
or a series:
Incorrect: The class valued respect, honesty,
and being on time in a teacher.
Correct: The class valued respect, honesty, and
promptness in a teacher.

6. PARALLELISM
RULE 3 Parallel structure should be
used when comparing or
contrasting elements (A is better
than B or X
is less than Y) :
Incorrect: James enjoys reading more than to
write.
Correct: James enjoys reading than writing.

9. Parallel words
Some of my friends are Indians,
Canadians, and Arabians.

kitchen, and bedroom.

10. Parallel Phrases
He prefers talking with friends,
milling around, and getting along
with people.
Ours is a country striving to be
competitive, to be industrialized, and
to be economically stable.

11. Parallel clauses
I try to show to my son that language should
not be a barrier, and that cultures of others
must be understood.
The qualified candidate must be someone who
cares for the poor, who values responsibility
and who delivers basic services to the
community.

12. Parallel Sentences
I ate in a Vietnamese restaurant, I
bought flowers in a Vietnamese
flower shop, and I hired in a
Vietnamese gardener.
Last week, we studied about
meteors, we tackled about asteroid,
and we learned about stars.

13. Write C if the sentences has parallel structures. If
the statement does not have parallel structures,
rewrite the part to make the sentence correct.
