English for the Workplace
COURSE OVERVIEW
English has become the language for international communication in today’s
world. As we forge ahead into the global market the need to be proficient and
fluent in the English language is a need. It is beyond textbook usage of the
language but more towards mastering a range of communicative language
competencies to enhance our perormance in job-related tasks properly.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course aims to equip working adults with the proficiency in written, spoken
and communicative English so that they can perform their daily tasks with more
confidence and accuracy in understanding customers’ needs.
TARGET AUDIENCE
i. Executives and Non-Executives from the public and private sectors
ii. Business professionals and non-professionals who conduct business
regularly with English speakers
ii. Those who wish to build rapport and strengthen relationship with potential
associates or customers
iii. Anyone who is interested to better their proficiency at the workplace
through proficiency and fluency in English language
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
i. recognise the different components of grammar in English
ii. identify effective language and styles of writing to use in business
communiation
iii. conduct oral presentations with confidence
iv. write brief and concise reports, minutes of meeting and other business
communication materials

TRAINER’S PROFILE
Sophia Jenang currently serves at the Sarawak Public Communication Unit
and attached to the Deputy Chief Minister’s Office. With a Diploma in
International English for Speakers of Other Languages (Expert) from City and
Guilds Institute of London, Sophia complimented her experience in the English
language when she served as a part-time tutor at Sarawak’s leading English
Language tuition centre, the English Language Centre (ELC) for 22 years from
1990 to 2012.
While serving at the English Language Cenre Sophia was entasked with
teaching English Language for the Cambridge syllabus at primary and
secondary levels, IELTS and MUET for tertiary levels. She also used the
Headway Series to teach working adults for several years.
Sophia was later offered a broadcasting job at REDfm Radio Malaysia
Sarawak where she produced and broadcasted talk shows, magazines,
documentaries, dramas and entertainment programmes for the station. She
later climbed the corporate ladder and joined the Sarawak Skills Development
Centre as a Corporate Training Manager before serving the Sarawak Civil
Service at DUN as Head of PR and later transfered to her current position.
She has been training the Sarawak Civil Service since 2012 in Emceeing
Skills, and has also trained the industries in other related areas like Customer
Service Skills, Event Management Skills, Report Writing and English for the
Workplace.
