A compound sentence joins two simple sentences with a comma and a coordinating conjunction, while a complex sentence contains an independent clause and at least one dependent clause. There are seven coordinating conjunctions in English used to form compound sentences. Examples are provided of compound sentences using "or" and "but" as well as a complex sentence with a dependent clause introduced by "since".
