 Speaking and Listening
 Course Description
 This course is classroom based. Students are expected to
  attend and participate in every lesson. In this course, Speaking
  has two main priorities. Firstly, the lessons will review basic
  speaking skills which will give the students more confidence to
  speak. Secondly, the students will be taught Spoken English, to
  develop their ability to communicate in English. Through
  Listening activities, students will improve their sound
  recognition, word recognition and comprehension of different
  accent which in turn will boost their speaking skills as well.
 The content of the lessons will be adjusted throughout each
  semester according to students’ abilities in different classes.
Course Objectives
This course is designed to enable students to:
 Gain confidence to speak English.
 Identify areas of weakness in speaking.
 Improve Pronunciation, Intonation, Fluency, Tone, Volume, and
   Speed.
 Learn how to use “small talk”, discussion, debate etc.
 Understanding how to summerise or paraphrase speech.
 Understanding how grammar is used when speaking.
 Express personal ideas, viewpoints and opinions.
 Recognise and use different language techniques.
 Identify and use idioms, Sayings, etc.
 Listen for specific information.
 Make prediction prior to and during listening.
 Make inference.

Advanced English Communication
Course Description: This course is designed to
 improve students’ communication skills to
 enable them to meet their academic as well
 as professional needs. Students develop their
 communication skills by exploring the various
 tools and elements used in and types of
 communication. They develop a significant
 awareness of communication strategies
 necessary for their professional life.

Develop their skills necessary for effective
  correspondence in their professional field
Make them aware of the necessity of and make
  use of non-verbal communication
Improve their public speaking skill leading to

  business communication and their nature, scope, and purpose
 Principles, functions and importance of communication and model of
  communication
 Media of Communication: Introduction, written communication, oral
  communication, face-to-face communication, visual communication,
  audio-visual communication, advantages and disadvantages of different
  media
 Types of Communication: External and internal, formal and informal, downward
  communication, upward communication, horizontal communication, grapevine,
  merits and demerits, media used in different types of communication
 Barriers to effective and improvement of communication
 Written Communication: Letters, memos, reports, writing good business letters, style
  and structure, pattern and writing techniques of various business letters, important
  commercial terms used in office correspondence.

 Office Memos: Meaning, function and format.
 Oral Communication: Speeches, interviews, meetings,
  conferences, telephonic conversation, techniques, advantages
  and disadvantages of different oral communication.
 Non-verbal Communication: Symbols, gestures, body language,
  etc. Visual aid in communication
 Fundamentals of report writing: Basics of report writing, report
  writing, report structure, the shorter form, long form.
 Comprehension and Precis Writing: Passage or paragraph related
  to business deals, important quotations, bids, etc.
 Art of Addressing: Meeting and Conference-preparing and
  presenting seminar papers.
 Technology of Business Communication: Early development of
  communication technology, changes resulting from new
  technology. A look to the future. Use of computer in Business
  Communication: Advantages and limitations.

  • 11. Course Contents Speaking and Listening Course Description  This course is classroom based. Students are expected to attend and participate in every lesson. In this course, Speaking has two main priorities. Firstly, the lessons will review basic speaking skills which will give the students more confidence to speak. Secondly, the students will be taught Spoken English, to develop their ability to communicate in English. Through Listening activities, students will improve their sound recognition, word recognition and comprehension of different accent which in turn will boost their speaking skills as well.  The content of the lessons will be adjusted throughout each semester according to students’ abilities in different classes.
