Dr. Sabine Brunswicker presented the latest work on how firms and individuals collaborate in an open source software community in the Red Hat Summit 2016. In particular, she highlighted how firms, whether they are OSS vendors or OSS uses, and also the individual developer, can support each other in order to successfully integrating new features in the software. Red Hat Summit is the premier open source technology event to showcase the latest and greatest in cloud computing, platform, virtualization, middleware, storage, and systems management technologies.
Open source software (OSS) is booming. Working the OSS way has become the new standard of software development. This trend has also changed the nature of OSS communities. While originally the domain of hobbyists and hackers, OSS communities are now attracting the participation of firms, both small and large ones. Indeed, OSS communities offer firms the opportunities to engage in what experts call ‘open innovation’. They open up to OSS communities and participate in OSS communities in order to create direct and indirect corporate innovation benefits. This presentation will focus on open innovation for new ‘industrial’ OSS communities, which bring together OSS vendors, OSS customers, as well as independent developers. One of the prominent examples of these new OSS communities is the OpenStack community in the area of cloud computing. These communities create unique opportunities not only for vendor but also for OSS customers to actively shape the agenda of the development activities and also implement this agenda. At the same time, these communities also expose firms to new management challenges given the size and diversity of the actors involved. In my talk I will provide very recent insights gained from a big data analysis focused on the ‘inner working mechanism’ of the OpenStack community. A deep dive into the contribution behavior of different vendors and OSS customers suggest that firms need to align their open innovation strategy with their idiosyncratic innovation interest, the development capabilities of their own employees, and their role in the community. For example, firms that seek to drive more radical changes in the OSS software should behave differently than those firms that are more focused on immediate quality improvements. In sum, the presentation will give those firms, which already participate in new ‘industrial’ OSS communities, as well as those ones, that only use OSS products, practical guidelines in how to use open innovation for the new ‘breed’ of OSS communities. Concrete examples will depict what kinds of features contributors suggested and how OSS vendors, OSS customers and independent developers collaborate in implementing those features.

From Open Source Towards Open Innovation: Fostering Corporate Innovation with Open Source Software (OSS) Communities presented by Dr. Sabine Brunswicker.
Dr. Sabine Brunswicker presented the latest work on how firms and individuals collaborate in an open source software community in the Red Hat Summit 2016. In particular, she highlighted how firms, whether they are OSS vendors or OSS uses, and also the individual developer, can support each other in order to successfully integrating new features in the software. Red Hat Summit is the premier open source technology event to showcase the latest and greatest in cloud computing, platform, virtualization, middleware, storage, and systems management technologies.
Open source software (OSS) is booming. Working the OSS way has become the new standard of software development. This trend has also changed the nature of OSS communities. While originally the domain of hobbyists and hackers, OSS communities are now attracting the participation of firms, both small and large ones. Indeed, OSS communities offer firms the opportunities to engage in what experts call ‘open innovation’. They open up to OSS communities and participate in OSS communities in order to create direct and indirect corporate innovation benefits. This presentation will focus on open innovation for new ‘industrial’ OSS communities, which bring together OSS vendors, OSS customers, as well as independent developers. One of the prominent examples of these new OSS communities is the OpenStack community in the area of cloud computing. These communities create unique opportunities not only for vendor but also for OSS customers to actively shape the agenda of the development activities and also implement this agenda. At the same time, these communities also expose firms to new management challenges given the size and diversity of the actors involved. In my talk I will provide very recent insights gained from a big data analysis focused on the ‘inner working mechanism’ of the OpenStack community. A deep dive into the contribution behavior of different vendors and OSS customers suggest that firms need to align their open innovation strategy with their idiosyncratic innovation interest, the development capabilities of their own employees, and their role in the community. For example, firms that seek to drive more radical changes in the OSS software should behave differently than those firms that are more focused on immediate quality improvements. In sum, the presentation will give those firms, which already participate in new ‘industrial’ OSS communities, as well as those ones, that only use OSS products, practical guidelines in how to use open innovation for the new ‘breed’ of OSS communities. Concrete examples will depict what kinds of features contributors suggested and how OSS vendors, OSS customers and independent developers collaborate in implementing those features.

The Apache Way

In this session Ross Gardler will describe how an Apache project is managed. He will describe how the foundation provides an technical and legal infrastructure for each project and how the Apache Way provides the governance scaffolding for individual projects. This provides the framework for Apache projects which are then free to apply the Apache Way to ensure their project succeeds.
Having attended this session you will have a better understanding of the inner workings of both the foundation and its projects. With this understanding you will be better equipped to engage with and benefit from Apache projects.
Cloud4All Introduction
While computing devices have highly customisable user interfaces,
common configuration requirements such preferred input device,
language, font, text size or colour have to be repeated on each device
used. Cloud4All is an EU project that is working to create an open
public infrastructure which defines a personal profile to be used to
configure any device. The profile is stored in the cloud and retrieved
by the user whenever they encounter a new device. This will give a
consistent experience on personal and public devices, such as cash and
ticket machines. It has additional benefits for accessibility for
those with some form of impairment such as a disability or difficult
physical location such as bright lighting. The project is working on
defining the profile ontology and format, creating the cloud based
infrastructure and protoyping applications that respond to
profile-based configuration settings. Eventually developer tools will
be created to provide easy access.
OpenDirective are part of the Cloud4all project consortium and their
contribution includes the development of a prototype application. This
application, Maavis, provides ultra simple access to cloud and local
media or communications and is designed for use cases that include
older people and those with dementia or other disabilities. The
application is designed to adapt to specific user and platform
needs. This talk introduce the concepts of cloud4all and the impact it
will have on both cloud connected and offline computing devices.
ATIS4All
ATIS4All and ETNA are 2 EU Thematic Networks led by Technosite and ETNA respectively that have been ‘clustered’ by the EU. Together they aim to establish a reference community portal, “ATIS4all collaborative portal”, offering reliable information on ICT ATs, and R&D initiatives. The Portal will allow users to search for information on specific ICT-base AT products, open source projects or services and share their opinion
and experience. User profiles personalise the information making it more useful to the different portal users. ATIS4all will provide the community portal and ETNA a search engine to locate information from diverse national databases.
The 2 broad categories of ‘user’ and ‘developer’ are supported via 3
sections
- Market place community: An online meeting point for users, providers and key actors interested in the field of ICT ATs, inclusive solutions and related services.
- R&D community: An online meeting point for portal users and key actors interested in R&D and cutting edge technologies applied to them.
- Key actors section: A tool to find organizations relevant in thefield.
For the UK this will provide access to knowledge of a wider range of
AT products and projects. It will reduce duplication of work between
countries and foster sharing and collaboration. Users, service
providers and developers can hope to reduce costs and become more
efficient.

A forge is just a tool, but is it the right tool?
The law of the instrument states "if all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail" (Maslow, 1966).
Software forges collect project artifacts and provide tools for project management. They do not build software, they do not write or test software, they do not attract users or contributors. It is the people that are important, not the forge. Without the people there would be no artefacts and thus no forges.
Forges, today, don't make it easy to discover the individuals and the communities behind the software. We typically find the project through some other means and then navigate to the forge. From there we start to examine the community using the hammer provided.
Are forges missing an opportunity here? Can we improve the way we discover the all important people and communities behind the projects?

In this presentation Ross Gardler presents some highlights from the survey and illustrates some of the main trends and concerns within the Further Education sector.

Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
