Assertion

Express yourself:
1. What is your opinion about the
effect of gold mining?
2. What can you say about the
people who mined the gold?
CHOICE
Assertion is a strong declaration
of statement of one’s opinion,
belief, or a fact.
Often, it is not a factual statement
that can be verified, instead it is
something arguable or debatable.
Examples:
“I have put my every effort to complete
this task today.”
“I believe modular learning is a nice idea
but students have to be responsible
enough for themselves.”
Assertions can be made after reading a
story, or a poem, or even watching a play.
An assertion is made to convince
someone about your interpretation of a
particular literary work.
Example 1:
“I really like this book and I
like the part when Romeo
asked Juliet to dance with him
and after the dance they both
fall in love with each other.
This scene creates very
beautiful thoughts in my
mind. And the tragic end is
also awesome.”
Example 2:
“The movie was hands down
amazing, I was stunned on
how good the animation was,
every new Disney movie that
comes out- the animation is
like 3x better. I really loved all
of the songs too! “
Think about this:
1. In your own words, what is an
assertion?
2. Now that we know what an assertion
is, can your statement about the video
be considered as an assertion? Why? or
why not?
3. What kind of sentence is an assertion?
Is it declarative, interrogative,
imperative, or exclamatory?

Did you know?
According to The Diggings, Philippines has 346 records of
mines listed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS)
particularly in the provinces of Zambales, Benguet,
Palawan, Camarines Norte, Compostela Valley, Surigao del
Norte, Puerto Princesa, Pangasinan, Marinduque and
Negros Occidental.
But how do you think gold mining started in the
Philippines?

important to show respect to
what other people are saying?
Why?

  • #7 Show a short history about gold mining through a video presentation. Instruct the class to watch mindfully and take note of the important details of the video. Gold was produced in the southern Appalachian region as early as 1792 and perhaps as early as 1775 in southern California. The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in California sparked the gold rush of 1849-50, and hundreds of mining camps sprang to life as new deposits were discovered. The video has sub

  • #15 Can your statement about the video be considered as an assertion? Why? or why not?
  • #16 Divide the class into groups of 3. Provide strips of paper with sentences to each group. Instruct them to identify if the sentences given are assertions or not. • #18 Now, you know how to identify assertions. This time, we will read a literary text and find some assertions from it. Baguio appeared to be the top source of gold during the quarantine period, he said, noting a “marked improvement in (mineral shipments)” from the area.
  • #19 Let us look for assertions in a particular literary text.   Did you know that we also have gold mines here in the Philippines?   We will read the “The Legend of Gold Mining”. We will discover how gold mining started in the city of Baguio. The story is found on pages 4-5 of your SLM. I will also give activity sheets about the story.(Give copies of the story to the students.)
  • #20 Mining Industry is one of the biggest industries in the world. Mining in the Philippines started in the precolonial period. Indigenous communities mined for gold, coppr and many other minerals.

It could be a positive reaction, or a negative reaction. Sometimes, people agree, sometimes, they disagree. But how should we react to one’s assertion?
  • #29 How should you react to one’s assertion? (Or What is the proper way to react when someone is expressing an assertion?)
