Pi experiences different levels of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs during his ordeal stranded at sea. He is initially focused on physiological needs like food and water. Later, with access to the lifeboat's supplies, he turns his attention to safety needs and building a raft to distance himself from Richard Parker. Ultimately Pi finds purpose and meaning through spiritual reflection, demonstrating self-actualization needs. He lets go of lower needs to focus on higher level needs for survival and fulfillment as the months pass in his isolation.
