4. There is no learning without motivation
According to the Oxford
English Dictionary
(2023), motivation is:
The mental processes that arouse,
sustain, and direct human behaviour
If we’re talking about
behavior, we can translate
this as:
The feeling of wanting to do something,
especially something that involves hard
work and effort
5. There is no learning without motivation
Why is it important to foster students’ motivation?
Encouraging motivation is
important because of the
implications for
Attention span
Memory
An unmotivated learner will have
more difficulty paying attention
and, therefore, memorizing
There is no learning
without motivation
6. There is no learning without motivation
Motivation affects learning to such an extent that two students with the
same cognitive capacity and the same skills, but different motivation, can have
a very different performance due to the way in which motivation intervenes in
this learning process
At the same time, at the brain level, motivation has a strong relationship with
dopaminergic release. A high state of motivation produces a peak in the level
of dopamine that favors attention and memory and, therefore, learning
But what types of motivation are there, and how should motivation be
fostered?
8. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
Generally we distinguish between two types of motivation:
1
Intrinsic motivation
An intrinsically motivated person does not need an external influence to feel motivated
to learn
For example, a baby is motivated to know and learn about the environment and does
not need to be given an external reward to continue learning
9. Intrinsic and extrinsic motivation
2
Extrinsic motivation
An extrinsically motivated person needs an external conditioner (an object, praise...)
or a compensation. Learning in itself is not enough to motivate this person
For example, a child who studies so that their parents will give them a console is
extrinsically motivated
What is the optimal motivation to facilitate learning?
The ideal is to promote intrinsic motivation to a greater extent, although we can use extrinsic
motivation as a support and on very specific occasions. However, how can intrinsic motivation
be fostered?
11. Motivating your students
Although it is complex to try to motivate students intrinsically, there are
conditions that favor motivation:
1 Keep a relaxed atmosphere in the classroom
2 Make sure your learning objectives are relevant
3
Provoke cognitive dissonance or a surprise factor: present
learning as a challenge that motivates students to solve problems
4
Generate reasonable expectations of achievement: Let the
students perceive they can achieve success if they work for it
12. Motivating your students
And most importantly: Personalize the learning process!
That is to say, make use of educational approaches that allow for maximum
personalization and adaptation of challenges and learning to students' interests, for
example through "discovery learning"
