7. Causes of childhood trauma
Although we tend to think that a trauma is caused by a single event that generates post-
traumatic stress disorder, there are situations that, repeated over time, can leave a similar
imprint. In this way, experts distinguish between:
Simple trauma Complex trauma
Due to a serious but one-time event
such as, for example, living through or
witnessing an accident
Prolonged situations over time such as bullying,
physical or psychological abuse (direct or indirect),
emotional neglect, community violence in at-risk
contexts, etc.
9. Behaviors or signs
Some of the consequences or signs that this disorder exists will be more or less severe
depending on the circumstances:
Poor school performance
Learning difficulties
Withdrawal or isolation
Sleep problems
Eating problems
Emotional management problems
Difficulty in interacting with others
Generalized anxiety
Panic attacks
11. What to do in the classroom
Given the overall impact of trauma on learning, if we have a case of a student with this
circumstance, it is important to:
01. Know the student and his or her personal history
02. Analyze and recognize the signs to see the limitations
03. Adopt the curricular measures required by the student
04. Be empathetic and understanding, and offer the student the support he or she needs
