Editor's Notes

  1. In order to continue to empower and better support women in military leadership, it is imperative to compare future leadership opportunities for women in the military to what opportunities exist for them today.What is the desired future for women in uniform? How do we close the gap between the current leadership situation for military women and the desired leadership situation for women in the military?
  2. Calculating risks to close the gap between the current leadership situation and the desired leadership situation for women; women in leadership positions must authentically create a culture of continuous improvement to the position of women in the military.
  3. Take Reasonable Risks: Work assignments and career moves are important vehicles for development; volunteer for and requests career opportunities outlined in your career map/individual development plan. Incorporate assignments that fit into the outlined promotion criteria for your CMF.
  4. Adapt to change: Military members move throughout their military careers on average every 2-5 years. Therefore, it is imperative all military members possess the ability to adapt to change. Learn the location and learn the culture when going to a new assignment; take full advantage of the expertise of others.This is more significant for women who are often mothers, wives and 50% of a dual military couple. As the nurturer in their household, the female is typically responsible for the sustainment of the household. Elective learning opportunities: these are internal or external courses or experiences that are made available to leaders on a voluntary basis. Tuition reimbursement for courses is provided to encourage leaders to take advantage of elective learning opportunities.
