projects , helping out by pipetting, centrifuging, counting cells
under microscopes
Mon 1st July – Dr Olivier Preham – scientist working on genetically
engineering regulatory T cells to treat autoimmune diseases.
Tues 2nd July – Dr Rachel Brown – a doctor (neurologist) who has just
started a PhD looking at how immune cells function abnormally in
patients with a disease cause autoimmune encephalitis.
Weds 3rd July – Dr Aideen O’Neill – a doctor (haematologist) who is
doing a PhD trying to understand how T cells (immune cells) cause a
complication of bone marrow transplantation called ‘graft versus host
disease’.
Thurs 4th July – Dr Tom Fox – a doctor (also a haematologist) who is
doing a PhD using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technologies to try and
develop new treatments for rare inherited immune deficiencies.
Fri 5th July – Dr Janani Sivakumaran – a scientist who is responsible
for looking after and supervising our flow cytometry facility.
4. Waitressing: The Brasserie of Light
, So Famous, Megan’s
• taking orders
• serving food and drinks
• clearing tables
• Taking payments
• Upselling
• Knowing the menu
5. Skills I developed
• Confidence- speaking to new customers
every day, talking about their days,
making them feel welcome
• Time management and organization- It
used to take me 1.5-2 hours to get to
work, with constant strikes and
delays, you always had to be early
enough to also then get dressed into
your uniform. You have your section
that you have to keep as organized as
possible as it would be chaotic with
tickets and glasses everywhere,
similarly in research, you need to
have tidy benches so you don’t mix
things up and can produce accurate
6. Skills I developed
• Hygiene- especially with allergy
orders you have to avoid cross-
contamination, which I learnt from
lab practicals at my work
experience like PPE
• Multi-tasking- In busy times, you
cannot focus on one table, you
have to be doing many things at
the same time to keep up, such as
clearing and setting up tables
whilst you are waiting for food
and drinks to be ready
7. I
develop
ed
• Problem solving- you come
across many problems such
as when customers don’t
like their food/drink, or
there are delays, you have
to offer them solutions to
keep them happy such as
offering other items
• Teamwork- you need to
communicate and work with
everyone else on the team
to make service efficient.
It's important for all
8. How I will use them in the
future
• Confidence- It is easier to get to
know new people, it will help work
with different team members
• Time management and organization - I
would like to pursue a masters and
that will require lots of independent
study, which will require me using my
time carefully to make sure
everything is done on time, as well
as for a future job, it will make
sure I’m on time and working
efficiently. For research projects
like the ones we are all starting,
organisation is incredibly important
to produce accurate and reliable
9. How I will use
them in the
future
• Multi-tasking- similar to waitressing
you need to multi-task in labs, you
can’t just do one part of a practical,
you have to have multiple things
running so when waiting for
incubation, you are still efficient
• Problem-solving- when working,
problems are bound to happen and
instead of being defeated by them,
you have to come up with quick
solutions and move past it and
learn to not do it again.
10. How I will use them in the
future
• Teamwork- It's important for
all work environments as it
makes the social part of
working better, good for
mental health as well
• Hygiene- avoiding cross-
contamination for things like
allergy orders, has been
great practice for labs as
you have to maintain hygienic
standards
