The document discusses iterative design and provides examples of logo design projects. It describes iterative design as a step-by-step process that allows designers to start with initial ideas and refine them over multiple rounds of feedback and revisions. Examples show early sketches and concepts for two logo design projects that were refined over several iterations, receiving feedback at each stage from clients and other designers until a final design was selected. The process is described as reducing pressure to find a perfect solution immediately while allowing ideas to develop through iteration.

This talk outlines how to work together as a Balanced Team. The ideas were pioneered by Tim McCoy (@seriouslynow, Pivotal Labs) and Janice Fraser (@clevergirl, Luxr.co) in 2011, and I've added on insights on how to shape your time as a contributor on a balanced team. Practical cheminformatics workflows with mobile appsAlex Clark
In recent years smartphones and tablets have attained sufficient power and sophistication to replace conventional desktop and laptop computers for many tasks. Chemistry software is late to the party, but rapidly catching up. This webinar will explore some of the cheminformatics functionality that can currently be performed using mobile apps. A number of workflow scenarios will be discussed, such as: creating and maintaining chemical data (molecules, reactions, numbers & text); searching chemical databases and utilising the results; structure-aware lab notebooks; visualisation and structure-activity analysis; property calculation using remote webservices; and a multitude of ways to share data collaboratively, and integrate modular apps within distributed and heterogeneous workflows.

Blueprint for a Creative Culture [Commonwealth Club of SF, Mar 2011]Kate Rutter
This talk was held at the Commonwealth Club of SF on March 23, 2011. It challenges the notion that company cultures must be dry, static, inhuman and impersonal to be professional. The Creative Culture Blueprint shows what elements create, feed and support a creative culture. Also included are examples of activities that can be used to unlock static cultures to be more creative.

The Power of Visual Notetaking :: XYC @Singularityu [Tue Jul 9, 2014]Kate Rutter
Visual note-taking is a powerful tool for design professionals who want to capture ideas and communicate them effectively. Known as sketchnoting or graphic recording, this practical technique enables you to capture key points of an idea, recall content and take action on new learnings. Whether used as a personal tool or as a facilitation method for group collaboration, visual notes are a powerful way to create memorable, engaging info summaries.
In this hands-on workshop, participants in the XYC youth summer program developed a visual vocabulary of images of things and concepts, learned simple lettering techniques, and got familiar with structuring information into common layout patterns. Then they brought it all together by capturing visual notes in real time from video, and got feedback and inspiration in a group critique.
If you're new to visual notetaking, this is a fun and fast way to get started. If you're a seasoned sketcher or visual note-taker, you can review this deck to advance your practice.
Designer vs Developer (Barcamp Memphis 2009)Steven Trotter
An informal discussion about the things that designers and developers do to piss each other off. We’ll talk about ways to make peace and learn to collaborate on a new level.
A Lean Design Process for Creating Awesome UXAnnie Wang
Lean UX is a proven approach for lean startup environment. My lean UX process is based on a commonly 6 step cycle ux process. In my practice with a few startups, I found it worked better for me to split the first step “concept” into 2 steps: discovery and wireframe. Thus my process is 7 steps – discovery, Wireframe, prototype, validate internally, test externally, summarize, iterate.

Let's go to the whiteboard: how and why software developers use drawingsMauro Cherubini
Software developers are rooted in the written form of their code, yet they often draw diagrams representing their code. Unfortunately, we still know little about how and why they create these diagrams, and so there is little research to inform the design of visual tools to support developers' work. This paper presents findings from semi-structured interviews that have been validated with a structured survey. Results show that most of the diagrams had a transient nature because of the high cost of changing whiteboard sketches to electronic renderings. Diagrams that documented design decisions were often externalized in these temporary drawings and then subsequently lost. Current visualization tools and the software development practices that we observed do not solve these issues, but these results suggest several directions for future research.

Slack (or Teams) Automation for Bonterra Impact Management (fka Social Soluti...Jeffrey Haguewood
Sidekick Solutions uses Bonterra Impact Management (fka Social Solutions Apricot) and automation solutions to integrate data for business workflows.
We believe integration and automation are essential to user experience and the promise of efficient work through technology. Automation is the critical ingredient to realizing that full vision. We develop integration products and services for Bonterra Case Management software to support the deployment of automations for a variety of use cases.
This video focuses on the notifications, alerts, and approval requests using Slack for Bonterra Impact Management. The solutions covered in this webinar can also be deployed for Microsoft Teams.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

LF Energy Webinar: Electrical Grid Modelling and Simulation Through PowSyBl -...DanBrown980551
Do you want to learn how to model and simulate an electrical network from scratch in under an hour?
Then welcome to this PowSyBl workshop, hosted by Rte, the French Transmission System Operator (TSO)!
During the webinar, you will discover the PowSyBl ecosystem as well as handle and study an electrical network through an interactive Python notebook.
PowSyBl is an open source project hosted by LF Energy, which offers a comprehensive set of features for electrical grid modelling and simulation. Among other advanced features, PowSyBl provides:
- A fully editable and extendable library for grid component modelling;
- Visualization tools to display your network;
- Grid simulation tools, such as power flows, security analyses (with or without remedial actions) and sensitivity analyses;
The framework is mostly written in Java, with a Python binding so that Python developers can access PowSyBl functionalities as well.
What you will learn during the webinar:
- For beginners: discover PowSyBl's functionalities through a quick general presentation and the notebook, without needing any expert coding skills;
- For advanced developers: master the skills to efficiently apply PowSyBl functionalities to your real-world scenarios.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.
