2. Make sure you have a lot of good
• good project

• good budget
• good content/artists
• good support

• good previous record
3. Our funding successes
Museum of Brisbane (MoB) - $28,600 towards the cost of
developing and presenting the exhibition Temperature 2 – A survey
of contemporary Queensland art, a survey of contemporary
Queensland visual art that shows the scope and diversity of visual
arts practice in this state.
Why do I think we had success?
•Yes! That’s a lot of money…but we spent it well. We showcased the work of
22 Queensland artists and produced an impressive publication
•We met goals as set by Arts QLD (not all of them of course)
•We could prove we had good internal support from BCC and the amount
asked for was only around 33% of the total costs
•Good products beget good products – we used our previous successes as
our strongest collateral (eg our Temperature exhibition in 2004)
4. Goals
Deliver solid outcomes under the following Sector Plan goals:
• Goal 1: Provide effective and targeted support and
services to emerging, mid-career and senior artists and
arts workers in the visual arts, craft and design areas
5. Goals
• Goal 4: Develop critical discourse and debate in the
visual arts, craft and design sectors
6. Goals
• Goal 5: Encourage the highest quality standards in art
museum practice, and encourage wide access to,
participation in, and appreciation of the visual arts, craft
and design sectors
7. Focus Areas
All eligible applications will
be considered for funding,
but the following focus
areas have been identified
for 2009:
Creating and Presenting New Work Initiative
This initiative supports the research or creation of new, innovative work
that contributes to the development of the visual art, craft and design
sector. All products should result in a presentation to a general
audience or an audience of critical peers.
8. Focus Areas
Exhibition and Promotion Initiative
This initiative supports the exhibition and promotion of high-quality
visual art, craft and design work in Queensland.
Writing and Publishing
This initiative supports projects that enhance debate and discourse in
visual art, craft and design through both new and traditional modes of
publishing.
9. Assessment criteria
• Artistic or cultural merit and innovation
Arts Queensland seeks to support projects that contribute to the
development of the arts sector. Projects of the highest quality artistic
or cultural value, or which demonstrate innovation will be favourably
viewed
• Demonstrated benefit to the community, including
opportunities to engage with and participate in the arts
All projects funded by Arts Queensland must result in a public
outcome.
• Evidence of collaboration with arts
or non-arts partners
As an applicant, you should seek
support from other sources.
This demonstrates broad support
for your project.
10. Assessment criteria
• Project viability and track record of the project delivery team.
Arts Queensland cannot support projects that present an
unacceptable risk. It is important to include relevant information that
demonstrates that the project has been adequately planned.
Marketing and promotional plans and timelines should be included
in the application along with any other documents that support the
likelihood of the project achieving its objectives.
• The funding and acquittal history
of the applicant will be taken
into consideration during
assessment.

14. General Hints
...things to keep in mind when dealing with funding bodies
• Keep talking to the funding body - they want to give the money
away – so should be happy to assist you to get your application
right.
• Budget – Spend some time getting this as close as possible to the
actual costs and really nut out what you are likely to spend the
funding money on. This is one of the
most crucial parts of your application.
Funding bodies know where they want
their money spent and you need to
assure them that is where you will be
spending it. It is also very tricky doing
your reconciliation at the end if you
have not thought about this and spent
the money in an adhoc manner.
15. General Hints
• Changes to agreement – Most funding contracts require you to report any
changes that take place (including the budget) through out the development
and presentation of the project. These changes might be related to content,
venues (if touring a project), involvement of the community or other
museum professionals, project dates or the budget.
• Other organisation’s paperwork – if you receive or are involved with
projects developed by other organisations, it is a good idea to make sure
you fulfil your reporting responsibilities. It is well worth accruing brownie
points with funding bodies, for future use.
• Read the instructions carefully - I am on the assessment team from time
to time for BCC Community Grants and there are many applicants who just
don’t understand what they can ask for.
• Look around - check that you have investigated all options
