Ms. Elisabeth ATANGANA presented on the topic of whether multinational enterprises or farmers should own land and produce food. She represents PROPAC, an organization of farmers' organizations in 10 Central African countries with 120 million people and 70% rural population. Some of the key challenges she discussed included land grabbing by multinational corporations due to lack of public agricultural investment, ensuring youth training and job security in agriculture, protecting small farmers by linking them to markets and through partnerships with businesses, and strengthening the role of women who make up 70% of the agricultural workforce. She concluded that family farming is best for sustainable development and food security, but there are significant challenges in establishing equitable partnerships between small farmers and businesses.
