Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties with social interaction and communication, as well as restrictive and repetitive behaviors. The prevalence of ASD has been increasing, with current estimates of 1 in 68 children being diagnosed. While the causes are unclear, genetic factors are believed to play a role. There is no medical test for diagnosing ASD, but behaviors are observed and diagnostic criteria are used. Treatments aim to improve functioning and include behavioral therapies, education programs, and sometimes medication.
