WHY ARE ONLY SOME SAVED?
Freewill & The Doctrine of Election
WHAT is election? God choosing certain people Acts 13:48 “As many as were appointed to eternal life believed”
WHO are elect? Christians
Jesus said “For many are called, but few are chosen” Matt 22:14
OT: Israelites are “chosen...out of all the peoples” Duet 7:6
NT: Jesus “chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles” Luke
6:13
WHEN did God
choose us?
Before eternity “Chosen in Him before the foundation of the world” Eph. 1:4
WHY did God
choose us?
His perfect LOVE
“The Lord set his love on your fathers and chose their offspring after
them…above all peoples” Duet 10:15
“For God so loved the world….” John 3:16
His GRACE and mercy “[God] saved us…because of his own purpose and grace” 2 Tim 1:9
HOW are we
saved?
By Grace
through Faith
in Christ
“the human race is truly redeemed and reconciled with God through
Christ, who, by His faultless [innocency] obedience, suffering, and death,
has merited for us the righteousness which avails before God, and
eternal life.” (FC. XI.15)
“[Holy Ghost] will be efficacious and active in us, convert hearts to true
repentance, and preserve them in the true faith” (FC.XI.17)
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your
own doing; it is the gift of God” Eph. 2:8
“For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the
ungodly.” Romans 5:6
“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our
trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.” Eph. 1:7
Bible
Experience Reason
God saves only a
FEW "By Grace
Alone"
Nothing in us,
makes God want
us
(2 Tim 1:9, Rom 5:6)
When "by grace alone"
is abandoned....
Arminianism &
"foreseen faith"
God chose elect because
he knew they would
have faith
Becomes our works that
save us
God extends
"Universal
Grace" to ALL
God's grace
extends to all
(2 Cor 5:15,
1 Tim 2:4, John 3:16)
When "universal grace"
isabandoned...
Calvinism & double
predestination
Christ only died for
certain people
God desired/chose/
predestined some to hell
Issue? LAW not Gospel
Paradox: BUT BOTH ARE SCRIPTURAL
Human reasoningcannot figure it out
