Girdling Trees to Create Snags and Coarse Wood Debris and to Improve Wildlife...John Lampe
Girdling trees and creating snags (dead, standing trees) is a great way to thin woodlots. We discuss how to do this with and without herbicide. Research indicates snags and coarse woody debris - all forms of dead wood - are vital to wildlife. The techniques for girdling trees include both mechanical girdles where the phloem layer is completely removed with a hatchet or other implement and chemical girdling where an herbicide is applied to the girdle. Some trees such as aspen can be girdled without using herbicides. Some trees such as red pine are tougher to kill and require applying an herbicide into the cuts. Another way to create a snag is to cut off all the branches. This method works for most conifers but won't work for most deciduous trees.
Migrating Airflow-based Apache Spark Jobs to Kubernetes – the Native WayDatabricks
At Nielsen Identity, we use Apache Spark to process 10’s of TBs of data, running on AWS EMR. We started at a point where Spark was not even supported out-of-the-box by EMR, and today we’re spinning-up clusters with 1000’s of nodes on a daily basis, orchestrated by Airflow. A few months ago, we embarked on a journey to evaluate the option of using Kubernetes as our Spark infrastructure, mainly to reduce operational costs and improve stability (as we heavily rely on Spot Instances for our clusters). To allow us to achieve those goals, we combined the open-sourced GCP Spark-on-K8s operator (https://github.com/GoogleCloudPlatform/spark-on-k8s-operator) with a native Airflow integration we developed and recently contributed back to the Airflow project (https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/AIRFLOW-6542). Finally, we were able to migrate our existing Airflow DAGs, with minimal changes, from AWS EMR to K8s.

Soft Introduction to Google's framework for taming containers in the cloud. For devs and architects that they just enter the world of cloud, microservices and containers
(java2days) Is the Future of Java Cloudy?Steve Poole
Java – it’s on billions of devices. We think it powers the world. Others disagree.
In this talk we’ll examine a few of the reasons why some developers believe Java is being left behind by younger (or at least different) programming languages. We’ll show where the claims make sense and debunk some of the more outrageous slander. We know the future of Java includes a more polyglot world so we’ll help you understand with practical advice where Java shines today and where you might be better using something else. We’ll also cover the challenges that all runtimes have in the new era of Cloud and how the Java community is leading the way in evolving Java into becoming the Cloud runtime of choice.
This talk will help you become more informed when dealing with those inevitable language cage fights around the water cooler. You’ll be able to refute the fake news and replace it with clear facts. Vote for Java – you know it makes sense
It is official: MySQL listens to HTTP and speaks JSON. MySQL got a new plugin that lets HTTP clients and JavaScript users connect to MySQL using HTTP. The development preview brings three APIs: key-document for nested JSON documents, CRUD for JSON mapped SQL tables and plain SQL with JSON replies. More so: MySQL 5.7.4 has SQL functions for modifying JSON, for searching documents and new indexing methods!
Opening Keynote for HadoopCon 2014
Summary of Insights Learned from the Data Science Program Team TrainingFred Chiang
Who really has the skills and talents to leverage the most value out of data? The Data Science Program (DSP) was co-founded by Code for Tomorrow and Etu. We believe that building and deploying a data science team consisting of members who possess and have the ability to utilize their different skill sets from a variety of industries is more practical and realistic. Versus hoping to find an individual data scientist who is an expert in a wide variety of technical fields ranging from math, statistics, and visualizations, as well as a solid background in other fields such as business, communication, and etc. The Data Science Program has identified four pertinent categories to place our members into. These four categories are Campaigner, Data Analyst, Data Hygienist, and Designer. Each team will have these four categories filled. During the training every team learns how to do data processing, data analysis, and visualization together with the sole purpose to use these skills to solve a common problem. After four weeks of intensive study, each team comes up with enterprise-grade team projects demonstrating the innovation of data-driven businesses.
After two rounds of DSP Team Training, DSP has accumulated 10 team projects and has graduated more than 60 alumni who are passionate about data science. During this journey of developing and deploying teams trained in data science, the most valuable aspects we walked away with was the witnessing of members growing in confidence from the learning and experience, the building of team work, and the overall growth of each individual. At the end of the day, our hope of as members of DSP, including myself is to instill and motivate more people to devote themselves to the exploration of data science. Now think about how you can do the same.
ESD 2012 Keynote: What Is the next Big Data?Fred Chiang

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
